Local Boys In Tourney Three Medford golfers left today for Tualatin Country club to participate in the Ore gon State Junior Chamber of Commerce tournament. The three are Doug Olson, Mike Miller and Tom Clark. They were taken north by Dick Mnnn. The tournament is Friday and Saturday with 18 holes each day. Four top golfers in the tourney will qualify for the national jaycee tourney next month at Huntington, W. Va. Olson, Miller and Clark qualified for state in a Med ford area meet at Rogue Val ley Country club In June. TIGERS OBSERVE ROOKIE Dctroll-luTll-Howie Koplilz, recently discharged from the Army, will pitch batting prac tice for the Detroit Tigers the next few days. The Tigers then will decide whether to place the 24-year old right hander, who was the minor league's lop pitcher in 1961, on their roster. KERR LOST TO REDSKINS Washinglon-IUPIl-The Wash ingion Hcdvklns have lost the services of defensive back Jim Kerr until after the start of the National Football League season. A spokesman said Kerr will have to under go an operation for what is believed to be a cartilage in jury. 773-8255 AAU Junior Swim Meet Young swimmers and divers of the state were priming to day for the annual Oregon AAU Junior Olympic Short Course championships. The two-day meet will open Friday morning at Medford's Jackson pool. This is just the second year the meet has been held outside the Portland area and Medford City recreation department has been host both times. Girls' swimming events arc scheduled on Friday and boys' on Saturday with 10 a.m. pre liminaries and 7 p.m. finals at Jackson pool. Diving pre liminaries for both boys and girls will be al 5 p.m. on Fri day with finals at the same time on Saturday at Haw thorne pool. . Entrants number 419 from 16 swimming teams of the state. Medford itself will have one of the larger entries - 54, with 28 girls and 28 boys. Age Groups The meet will be conducted in age groups, 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14 and 13-16, with races running from 50 to 400 yards in the 25-yard Jackson tank. Meet performances here will be compared with those in other states to determine national championships. The meet is open to the pub lic and bleachers have been provided for spectators. Swimmers from the farthest distances were expected to ar rive this afternoon and eve ning for tomorrow's competi tion. Junior Olympic patches and medals will be given for first through third places and rib bons for fourth through sixth. UPI Sports Writer The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants launch the second half of their dog fight for the National league pennant tonight by visiting their favorite eastern "mutts." The Dodgers open a three game set against the New York Mets, whom they have whipped nine time in 10 games. The Giants will be al Philadelphia for a similar three-game series with the Phillies. Al Dark's men ran up a 7-3 log against the Phils during the first half of the campaign. The Giants and Dodgers split a four-game series in San Francisco last week end, leav ing the Dodgers with a half game lead at the All-Star break. The outcome gave the Fal cons a S-2 league standing and assured them of no less than a titular lie with Med ford which has completed league play with a 5-3 mark. On Sunday the Falcons will go to Grants Pass seeking the win which would mean suc cessful defense of their divi sion mantle. Benson walked three and whiffed six in bringing his season pitching record to 4-0. Sherm Allen and Dave Saks each had two hits for the victors. The Falcons also won the second game, a non-counter, 2 to 0. Their pitcher, Dick Carleton, and the Hawks' Jay Paxton each tossed one-hitters. Three errors in the third frame produced the runs.
