Amelia S. - I d o n ' t want Tom calling at our home with other women. Eric S. - Why not? His mar riage is as good as over. Amelia S. - A business friend o Eric's has been put ting me in an awkward posi tion, but neither of them sees it my way. I want my hus band, at least, to admit that a married man ought not call at our home with the various tootsies he takes out. Tom and his wife have been separated for years, it's true, and their divorce is pending. But romething is holding it up, and while things drag on, Tom is playing th field with a. succession of glamorous candidates for his next mar riage. This goes against my grain. In addition, there are our teenage children to consider. They remember Tom calling with his wife and now they must look on and watch his present cutting-up. In receiv ing Tom, I look as though I accept his behavior. I defin itely do not. Eric S. - For all practical purposes, Tom is a divorce. Because of a technicality the decree is not yet on paper. What's the poor guy to do? He can't go places with his wife, and Amelia doesn't think he should appear with any other woman. This situa tion may continue for months yet. A definite date for the granting of his divorce hasn't even been mentioned. I don't feel there's anything improper here. Our children know that Tom and his wife have pff-t and are being di vorced. His keeping company with new women can't shock them. Tom and I are friends from 'way back. My sympathy is all with him. I don t feel any spe cial obligation to his wife. I think Amelia is being unduly hard on Tom. Maybe she thinks wives ought to stick up tor each other no matter what. But Tom's right in this ease. The Council - We'll hold with Amelia in this situation. To her and her children, Tom still very much married. Therefore, out of respect for the institution of marriage if not for wives-, Tom should call at the S. home either with his wife or alone. Evidently Tom is going through the letus-be-gay phase which follows many split-ups. This is the period during which one mate hopes the other will get wind of what a ball he's having with out her, of how very expend able and dispensable she is, of how many glorious creatur es are vying to take her place. Amelia needn't be a party to this. Or if she must join Eric in his friendly gestures to Tom, it can be at a restaurant or a theater. She should not be called upon to open her home to Tom's campaign of proving how much fun it is to be on the loose again - es pecially since Tom isn't le gally entitled to that fun. Perhaps Eric is right about his wife's automatic loyalty toward Tom's wife. Putting herself in the latter's place, she may well reason, "While there's a marriage, there's hope," and refuse to encour age the dissolution. But there's also the chance that the technicality holding up the decree may be the pos sibility of a reconciliation. Since we're not told why the matter drags on, we can pic ture a wife (and her lawyer) waiting for Tom to come to his senses, giving him enough rope, letting him have his fling. While Tom's affairs are still in this floating stage, his friends must be careful not to take irrevocable sides. "Hands off" is the best policy for both Eric and Amelia, at least as regards Tom's tangled marital status. As Tom's old friend, Eric can help him from the side lines. Tom must regularize his position. If there's to be a di vorce, no turning back, then it must be followed through and granted. As a clearly free man, Tom may then escort his lady friends to enjoy the cozy domesticity of Eric's and Amelia's home. And if he grows seriuos about one, Ame lia will welcome her into their circle of intimates -when she's his wife, that is.
