MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON Educational Activities Urged For Children During Summer MONDAY, JULY 9, 1962 Br DAVID NYDICK UPl Education Specialist There are many ways par ents can help their children's education during the summer months. There is good evidence to how that many children re gress o v . r the summer months. This would be a na tural assumption since they are no longer involved in daily practice and instruction. After the long school year children need the relaxation involved in summer play and vacations. This does not mean that valuable educational ac tivities cannot be included in your summer plans. Much progress in reading depends upon experience. En courage your child to use the local library and other valu able books. Pleasant and un pressured reading can go a long way towards increasing reading growth. Reading for relaxation and interest is the greatest single factor in read ing progress Help maintain a good work ing knowledge of arithmetic fundamentals. This can be done through usage and prac tice. Have your children par ticipate in planning a budget for a trip. Follow through by having them keep an account of expenditures, mileage, and gas usage. Send them to the store to do your shopping. Put them on an allowance. Let them help with cooking, especially with reading reci pes and measurements. Should Encourag Writing The summer is an ideal time to foster writing. This important activity should not be overlooked. While on vaca tion, have your children main tain correspondence with rel atives and friends at home. While at home, your children can write to neighborhood and school friends who may be away at camp or in sum mer homes. Encourage them to describe their many ex perinces. Writing of this na ture will help with vocabu lary, spelling, creative think ing, and other language skills. Vacation time is particular ly suitable for planning ex periences which will be use ful in social studies, history, geography, study of people and relationships, etc. Social adjustment develops as the children spend time and play with others. Help them to learn compromise and consid eration. Allow Planning Participation Long or short trips can be organized with some empha sis on historical, geographical, and industrial sites. Have your children participate in the journey. While traveling, they can gain much by follow ing the map and helping with directions. Point out and dis cuss what you see. Emphasize comparisons of differ ent areas, and the reasons that these areas have become in dustrial, agricultural, or tran sportation centers. Many exhibits and activities are available which will help improve appreciation and un derstanding of cultural areas such as music and art. Look for special children's plays, and art exhibits or demonstra tions. Many local organiza tions sponsor series of plays. Should you find it difficult to locate these activities, check newspapers, automobile clubs, chambers of commerce, historical societies, industrial tours, and museums. The above examples of val uable experiences are only samples of many important learning activities. Whatever your summer plans may be. you will be able to find many opportunities to help your children. The more they ex perience, the more they will have to relate to school activities.
