IN THE LAST PIECE that James Thurber wrote, the great
humorist took a dim view of modern trends in his chosen
field. "Comedy," he noted, "didn't die; it just went crazy.
It has identified itseit
with the very tension and
terror it once did so much
to alleviate. The roost is
ruled today by what has
been called the comedy
menace: horror jokes,
magazines known as hor
ror comics, and sick
comedians . . . Life at
the moment is a tale told
in an idiom, full of un
soundness and fury, sig
nifying nonism."

Two elderly ladies wandered into Yankee Stadium just as
Roger Maris unloaded a prodigious home run into the right-field
stands They sat watching the proceedings that followed in
apathetic alienee until a few innings later. Marls came up again
and hit another homer to virtually the same spot aa the first one.
One of the ladies nodded at this point and said, "We can go
now, Hilda. This is where we came in."
