"I'm a little bit nervous about modeling in a night club," said the adult-looking Cheryl before her first ap pearance. "But I did have some experience modeling in high school." It's a once-a-week job, be tween 5 and 7 p.m. Fridays. The night club fashion show has become a vogue for sev eral clubs along the Sunset Strip. Covered With Serape Looking all of her 18 years, Cheryl posed in a bikini but was demurely covered with a e r a p e , or cape, over her shoulders. Living On Own Miss Crane, a pretty brun ette, said she was on good terms with both her mother and father, restaurateur Steve Crane. She said she was not living at home and had been on her own for two months, not accepting help from her parents. "I don't live at home," she said. "I share a small house in West Hollywood with an other girl. I want to make good on my own." Cheryl was 14 when she was a central figure in the Stompanato case. Available Dollar-Saving Values MEDFORD Feeding fhe Family j By ZOLA VINCENT j Food Editor ' Tapioca Favored as Fruit Pie Thickener Fruit and berry juices must be thickened just riyht for complete pie success. Most fruits and berries require a thickener if the juice is not to spread out thinly over plates when pie is cut. All of the available berries are fine in pies. Peaches, apri cots, pie cherries and plums beckon the pie maker. How about mixing berries-or mix ing berries and fruit? Many prefer quick-cooking tapioca as a pie filling thick ener because it protects the bright fruit or berry color. It doesn't cloud as some thick eners do. It is time-saving and easy to use because there's no pre-cooking. 3 to 4 cups prepared berries or fruit 1 to 1 1 ' cups sugar 1 to 2 tablespoons quick cooking tapioca 'i teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon butter or cream Unbaked pastry for 2 crusts Prepare pie crust from fa vorite recipe or mix. Prepare fruit. Combine all dry ingre dients, adjusting amount of sugar and thickener accord ing to sweetness and juici ness of fresh fruit which var ies constantly. Mix thorough ly. Line pie plate with pastry; fill with fruit mixture and dot generously with butter. Adjust top crust or arrange lattice or pastry strips, straight or twisted. Brush with butter to glaze. Bake in hot oven. 450 de gree?, 15 minutes: reduce heat to moderate, 350 degrees, and continue baking 15 to 25 min utes longer. Berries and soft fruits take shorter time. Dinner Treat For an extra special dinner treat, stir chopped raisins in to biscuit mix: add Cheddar cheese and enough milk to make a soft dough. Roll out on a lightly floured board and cut into circles or dia monds or other fancy shape. Bake as usual. Set-Up Standing Order for Milk The good old summer time reminds us that running down to the store for another gal lon of milk gets mighty in volved among the teen-agers. So avoid possible friction as to who is driving the car on the errands by simply step ping up standing order for milk. Half gallons of milk in crease in demand right along. They cost less than two indi vidual quarts whether store bought or home-delivered. Take up less space, too. Same thing is true of ice cream and other frozen des serts. Bargains are in gallons. Keep milk handy in the re frigerator-ready for more children at more meals; ready for more refrigerator raiders between meals because milk a mainstay for buoyant health and energy. If You're Putting Up Berries or Fruit Do not attempt to "put up" too many berries or fruits at a time or you'll ruin your dis position and waste valuable food. Above all things, do not experiment. Ingredients are too costly. Follow canning, freezing, jam-making or other directions to the letter. They were perfected by experts. Take early morning deliver ies and do your processing the same morning. Once you've started the job, finish it. No holdovers or your fin ished product will puffer. Sprinkle with dill seed and add salt and pepper to taste before serving. Discuss Canning, Freezing Plans With Produce Men If you are watching for the best buys, hoping to catch the peak ot the season for fruits, berries and other produce, it will pay you well to talk over your plans w ith the men who head the produce departments in local stores. They're just as interested in "moving'' tiie best buys as you are in catch ing them. They watch the law ot supply and demand at work every day in the year. There's healthv competition among the markets to offer the season's best produce at the lowest possible prices. Watch the ads, too! Plan to "put up" fruits and berries the morning you pick them up at the store. Once you start the job, see it through while the product is at peak of perfection. There is no way of restoring qua lity. Remember the sugar, spices and other items. Be sure you have plenty of jars, freezer jars, glasses, paraffin and other canning and freez ing paraphernalia. We mention strawberries first because they'll soon be gone. Now is the season of green apples for apple sauce, apricots, blueberries, boysen bcrries, loganberries, cherries. figs, nectarines, early plums, raspberries. Peaches peak in July and August. Other Good Buys Fryers, broilers, stewing chickens and turkey continue high in nutrition, low in cost. There's plenty of beef being specialcd among the thrifty cuts that require longer cook ing. Lamb and pork are sea sonally higher but ad scan ning will reveal specials. There's super abundance of eggs at very reasonable prices so put eggs into the menus more often; give father and the boys eggs at breakfast; put them in egg salads and in casserole dishes. Cantaloupes lead the melon parade with an abundance al so of watermelons and other varieties. Plenty of avocadocs, early-season grapes, grape fruit. Bing and Lambert cher ries from the Pacific north west are of exceptional qua lity. Lemons and limes too. Vegetable bins are piled high with cabbage, cauli flower, .cucumbers, beans, green and red cabbage, let tuce, romaine and other salad greens. There's plenty of corn, celery, topped carrots, dry onions, soft squash, green peppers, and of course long white potatoes that are so per fect for potato salad making. Put fish and shellfish in menus more often. Check the fine display. LICENSE REFUSED Galveston, Tex. - UTH - A Coast Guard inspector re fused to license a boat here Thursday even though it had all the necessary equipment, including life preservers. KSPEEECHH Back Stairs: By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI White House Reporter Washington - Ilil'H - Back stairs at the White House: Two new books have been in frequent evidence recently around the White House: "The Quotable Mr. Kennedy," a ser ious collection of highlights from the speeches and state ments of the President, and "Who's In Charge Here?" a paperback collection of news photographs with hilarious quotations attributed to some of the world's more prominent figures. Both volumes are the work ot uerain L.. oaroner, an im aginative young New York and New Jersey public rela tions man. Reviewer Backtracks One of the nation's more serious book reviewers was preparing to blast "Who's In Charge Here?" on grounds that it was in bad taste, dis respectful and unworthy of public perusal. The reviewer then heard that the President himself had seen the book and I 111 Time Two Books in laughed heartily at some of the photographs in which he was involved. Sample: A picture of the President talking on the tele phone while his daughter, Caroline, stands beside him. The caption shows Kennedy saying, "No, this is her fath er." The reviewer was unable to believe reports that Kennedy accepted the book in good humor. He said stories to this effect were designed to fur ther the disrespect for Ken nedy. j Good circuIlllion This is not true. "Who's In Charge Here?" probably has received more circulation around the White House than any volume since "Profiles In Courage." And the President thinks it is a very funny spoof. What this situation illus trates is the fact that the Pres ident's supporters sometimes become far more evangelical in his behalf than he would ever be-or, for that matter, any member of his family. asF FOR By Jimmy llatlo But later mjew he's trying to PROVE heonlv drinks tea-listen TO HIS CASE HISTORY- Evidence This is a form of political de ification which on occasion can be quite a bother to Ihe honoree. Experts Active For some weeks, a special task force of public relations experts has been operating out of the White House in an ef fort to generate public sup port for the President's liber alized foreign trade program. It is distinctly a White House operation, yet there ex ists at 1600 Pennsylvania ave. a split personality when it conies to the problem of link ing the special force with the Chief Executive. One of the task force prin cipals is Carl Levin, on leave of absence from his distilling industry post to help the trade program. Levin s assignment was announced by the White House.
