MEDFOHD, OREGON Greene Authors Insurance Text For Beginners Eugene - Insurance per forms its chief function dur ing the period before any loss when it is viewed as a meth od of eliminating the uncer tainty that exists for each in dividual as to whether or not the loss will happen to him. This is one of the views ex pressed In ' Risk and Insur ance," a beginning insurance textbook written by Dr. Mark R. Greene, associate profeor of insurance and of the department of mariftin nd industrial mantMirnat tt the Unfc'ersity i O'toft. Dr. Greene emphasizes the future risk manager's viewpoint, the economic viewpoint of society as a whole and the individual consumer's viewpoint. Regarding the latter's view point, Dr. Greene wrote: Fe thoughtful savers would in vest in a business or in the stock of a corporation with out a careful investigation be forehand . . . Yet, in buying life insurance, which for many constitutes their only major lifetime savings plan, it is doubtful if in the major ity of cases any investigation or analysis takes place. Stimulate. Analysis In his book. Dr. Greene en deavors to treat the basic ideas, problems and principles found in all types of modern day insurance and in other methods of handling risk, to unify as many of the diverse elements of risk and insurance as possible, and to stimulate analysis of the problems of risk and insurance by means of thought-provoking ques tions at the end of each chap ter. In comparing his book with others in the field, Dr, Greene points out that the questions at chapter ends are "consider ably more lengthy and of the discussion and thought va riety," while questions in many other texts "are mere ly one sentence questions de signed to review text mate rial." Many up-to-date statistical tables are used in order to show that a problem exists and the extent to which it ex ists. The material is given be fore a solution is posed, a bas ic learning device which Is not found in all texts of this nature. It is Dr. Greene's conten tion that a text should not be a source of material or con tractual information but it should be explanatory in na ture, "bringing a student's skill and knowledge up to a point where he can handle the subject from then on out." Dr. Greene classroom tested the book for a considerable period of lime before publica tion. Late last year, a committee of which Dr. Greene was a member treated a new con cept in the academic approach to instruction on risk in a booklet released by the Am erican Risk and Insurance association. . BeceivM Grant In March, Dr. Greene re ' ceived a $3000 grant to con duct research this summer concerning attitudes toward risk. His study will test these attitudes and measure the de gree of consistency between them and insurance buying behavior. Co-Author of the textbook. "Mathematical Methods and Models in Marketing." Dr. Greene has contributed arti cles to such publications as Journal of Insurance and Ore gon Business Review. He for merly served as administra tive editor of the Journal of Insurance.
