mit Spadefoot toad" he is

always alone in a hole in the
earth, and his rear feet are
spadelike, equipped with
sharp, horny ridges suitable
for digging.
Tliere are great numbers of
these peculiar toads distrib
uted throughout a large part
of the U. S.. yet tew people
know of their existence. But
they arc present, deep in the
ground, in a cool silent tomb
of their own making. There
they are waiting, head down,
resting on the forelegs, eyes
closed and body puffed out
like a round ball.
There are only two things
In the world they wait for; a
heavy rain that will bring
them above ground to feed; or
for that day, which may be
months away, when they will
visit a nearby pond for egg
laying. Then, at the end of a
couple of days back to the
hole in the ground again;
inert and in a stupor.
Yet. even in his coma, he
becomes conscious if a heavy
