Olson-Lawyer High Bidder at National Forest Timber Sale Olson-Lawyer Lumber, Inc of Medford, was high bidder last week for 5,700,000 board feet of national forest timber in the Union Flat No. 2 area, Union Creek Ranger District, Rogue River National forest. Forest Supervisor C. E Brown reported the high bid totaled S130.400. This com pares with the forest service appraised price of $106,750, an increase of 22 per cent. Next high bidder in the oral auction was Steve Wilson of White City. Other bidders were McGrew Brothers, Ko gap Manufacturing company, and Fir-Ply, Inc. Timber on Unit Timber in this unit consist ed of 3,150,000 board feet of Dnuslas-fir bid at $25 per thousand, 2.150.000 board feet of pines bid at $23 per thousand and 400,000 board feet of hemlock and other tpecies bid at $5.50 per thou sand. Kngap Manufacturing com pany of Medford was high bidder for 4,200,000 board feet of timber in the Grizzly Canyon area, Ashland Ranger district. The high bid totaled $71, 622. The forest service ap praised price for the timber was $71,354.50. Next high bidder in the oral auction was Brecount Brothers of Grants Pass. Steve Wilson was a third bid der. The timber consisted of 2,110,000 board feet of Douglas-fir bid at $21.25 per thou sand, 140,000 board feet of ponderosa pine bid at $22.30 per thousand, 250,000 board feet of sugar pine bid at $26 65 per thousand, and 1,700.000 board feet of white fir and other species bid at $10 per thousand. Submits High Bid Olson-Lawyer Lumber, Inc. was high bidder for 7.300,000 hoard feet of national forest timber in the Beartree area, Union Creek Ranger district. Other bidders were Steve Wilson and Fir-Ply, Inc Timber in the unit consisted of 3,500,000 board feet ol Douglas-fir bid at $17 per thousand, 950,000 board feet of western white pine bid at $26.25 per thousand, and 2,850.000 board feet of Shasta red fir and other species bid at $10 per thousand. Olson-Lawyer Lumber, Inc. of Medford also was high bid der for 4,160,000 board feet of timber in the South Red Blanket area. Prospect Ranger district The high bid totaled $92, 540, compared with Ihe forest service appraised price ol $63,246, an increase of 46 per cent. Next high bidder was .1. I... Spencer of Prospect. Other bidders were Fir-Ply, Inc., and Steve Wilson. Timber consist ed of 2.840,000 board feet of Douglas-fir bid at $17.50 per thousand, 960,000 board feet of sugar pine and western white pine bid at $42 per thousand, and 360.000 board feet of white fir and other species bid at $7 per thousand. Winema Forest Gels Landscape Architect Klamath Falls-A. E. Smith supervisor of the Winema Na tional forest, announced rec ently that Frederick L. Hen ley has been appointed land scape architect with the Wine ma forest. Henley's duties will be in the field of recreation plan ning and improvement de velopment. One of his first assignments. Smith said, will he thp design of utilities and landscaping at the Aspen Point campground at Lake of the Woods. Henley is a graduate of Kansas State university, Man hattan, Kan. V i: - S r Specialized Crew Of Fire Fighters Stationed in Area Applegale - A specialized crew for fighting large forest i fires is now stationed at Star Ranger station, located in Ap plegate 20 miles southwest of Medford. The crew of 25 men, mostly college students, has under gone a two-week period of training to prepare th!m to fight large forest fires any where in the northwestern United States. They will be available to work on blazes in Oregon, Washington, California, Ida jho, Nevada, and Montana, ac cording to Robert Webb, fire ' control officer. I The men. who are led by foreman Francis (Pete) Greg ory. Medford, are from all parts of the country, includ ing midwestern slates. They were chosen from applica tions on the basis of previous work experience, and two thirds of them have had prev ious fire experience. They range in ape from 18 to 45 years. Fought Several Fires Trained hy Gregory and Ihree assistants, the crew learned use of fire tools, fire behavior, line construction, use of pumpers, and snag fall ing. They also fought several fires to gain practical ex perience. Although such crews have been in existence for many years, this is the first year one has been stationed at the Star Ranger station. Arrangements have been made to fly the crew to any lire that is any distance from the area. Transpor t a t i o n probably will be in DC-3's, some of which will be forest service planes and some pri vate. They will be large enough to accommodate the whole crew and the necessary equipment. Plans call for the crew to he c?t the Medford Municipal airport withTn Hi hours after receiving a fire call. It is felt that the crew will be stationed at the ranger sta tion in future summers, al though Webb said that Is not a local decision.
