MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON
National Service
Life Insurance
May Be Reopened
Washington -UPI- H o u e
and Senate leaden and the
Budget Bureau have reached
an agreement for early con
gressional action to let World
War II and Korean war vet
erans reinstate lapsed 01 in
surance or take out new poli
cies.
A roadblock against passage
of a $100 million cosl-ol-liv-1ns
increase in service-con
nected compensation p a y-
m?nts also was removed.
Both nieces of legislation
are given a good chance of
iinal passage.
Bills Deadlocked
The insurance and compen
sation bills had been dead
locked between the House and
the Senate. The House has
voted several times to in
crease service-connected com
pensation payments, and the
Senate also has approved it
but with an amendment to al
low reopening of National
Service Life Insurance.
The administration has
stood firm against the NSLI
reopening on the ground that
It was not justified. As a re
sult both bills were stymied.
The Budget Bureau and the
Veterans Administration ad-
Vised Congress Wednesday
that the administration would
asree In an insurance reopen
ing bill provided certain
changes are made.
Service Dates Listed
Under the proposed com
promise any veteran of mili
tary service between Oct. 8,
1D40, and Dec. 31, 1B56, pro
vided he is now out of the
service, could reinstate, or I
take out for the first time, up
to $10,000 in National Serv
ice Life insurance.
Of the nearly 20 million
men who were in service dur
ing that period, only about 5.0
million still carry their GI
policies. The Veterans Admin
istration estimates that about
one million more would take
advantage of- the new priv
ilege.
