Rg $12.95 8 Lionel, Sherman Is trying to toughen him and he makes fun of the child for crying, even when there's very good reason for tears, such as painful nil. "BiK boys don't cry," is all Lionel hears from his dad. I, on Ihe other hand, see nothing wrong with putting my arms around the child, drying his tears and saying a few words of comfort. Far from weakening him, I think I'm- adding to his strength that way. He feels fortified knowing there's someone be hind him, If he cries for no reason, like over a too-small portion or a too-early bedtime, I chime In with Sherman, of course, and tell him to pipe down. But there are times for sympathy, I Insist, Sherman R.-Wiist sort of world would this be if everyone went around belly aching over every little set back? There s nothing worse than a crybaby, especially when It's a big boy. I'm try ing to prepare Lionel for real manhood, where you swallow your feelings and go out and try again. If his mother had her way, Instead of getting over a disappointment fast and making a fresh stab, he'd dissolve in tears and with draw from all competition, If I catch Lionel crying be cause he wasn't chosen for the baseball game, I call him a baby and make him stop pronto. I don't want him to show what a sore loser he ia. But Gert gets him later. asks him how he feels and before long he s crying again She wants him to act "nat ural." Well, acting brave and manly should be natural, too. enough. Hurt feelings, humil iation are experienced as in tensely by boys as by girls. But its difficult to explain this to junior boys who heckle a cabinmate for cry ing because he Is homesick. . If a girl cries it s all right, but if a boy cries he's fre quently branded a sissy." We begin to appreciate now the role of grandmothers and other indulgent members ot the old-time household. They tendered the surreptitious pat of comfort, the shoulder to wecD on for anguished young ones. This didn't necessarily produce softies. It may well account for some of the well balanced adults who later 'stood up to" crushing odds. Both Gertrude and Sher man have their hearts in th. right olace toward Lionel. Their problem is to discern which hurts call lor a tougn response, and which a tender one. When in doubt, however, err on the side of tenderness, Sherman. Th. Council! To answer Sherman's question as to what sort of world we'd have If everyone revealed his true feelings, we'd say quickly, "A healthier one." Acting natural isn't acting. "Acting" brave and manly Is often pretense and cover-up. Apd psycho-log-iats agree that whatever is ploughed under will, In the Interests of self-preservation, seek an outlet. Thus If Sherman Insists that Lionel bite his quivering llo and hold back the merci ful release of tears, he must offer Lionel another way to dissolve strong feeling. Scold lng and mocking the child without also helping him leaves Lionel with double trouble. Gertrude's position of accepting Nature . way ol re vealing emotion, that Is through the flow of quick hot tears, is better in the long run than damming up the currents as Sherman would do. With regard to an adult'i proper attitude toward a boy's sobs, we cite the advice of Marie H.rtwlg, supervisor of Sfody Shows Father Rates More Gifts; Mother's Cost More New York - tUPD - Fathers get more presents than any body - which should consoia them while they dig in tneir jeans to pay for them. A study reported By a watch company shows that, contrary to general belief, more gifts are given on fa ther's day than mother's day. Mothers usually get some what more expensive pres ents, but in terms of number, of gifts, father'i day ranks next to Christmas and Blrtn days as the biggest gift oc casion of the year.
