Edited by Mrs. Alma Denny. (Copyright Dy ueneral reatures iorp.j Mra. F. W. - Because of slight blemish she won't go anvwhere. Rima W. - Why parade these ugly blotches? I ll go to a doclor, but nowhere else. e Mri. r. w. - When I re ceived a notice from the P.T.A. that the students were going to offer a debate on nuclear testing at the next meeting, I was sure Rima would be one of the partici pants. She's the current events reporter on the high school paper and has written a scries of articles on the Ge neva Conference and other talks about the topic. But It's the same old story She has a faint "strawberry mark" on her cheek and she thinks nobody looks at any other part of her but that. As a child Bhe dldn t mind it We called It "an angel's kiss." When she grew self-conscious about it, I bought her a cos metic that masks it. She's been mixing a little more late ly, so I thought the problem was solved. But now she's again backing down from group activities. She's an at tractive girl and she's letting her imagination make too much of a slight imperfection. Rima W. - My mother Is plain blind. Maybe all fond parents are. I'm 18 years old and in a high school where how 'you look is more Impor tant than what you know, how you feel, how you act or anything else. And what my mother calls a slight imper fection, well - look at It. It's the map of Australia spread across my face. That goo she bought me just makes it all the more conspicuous. Even though my folks think it's nothing and I should for get about it, it's on my mind constantly. I want to go to a skin specialist about it. But years ago some doctor told my mother It would get light er and fade, so the won't lis ten to anyone else. It's no lighter, it spoils my appear ance, and if I can't get rid of it I certainly won't walk around displaying It. ' That's why I backed out of the debate in school. I II be In the audience. e e The Councili Fond parents aren't blind, Rima. It's the "non-fonds" who are. The fond ones sees a teen-ager's pain and try to assuage it In practical, common - sense ways. We think your mother has done this. But we also think she's ready to try a more serious approach in view of your prowlng distress and unnatural aloofness. Fondness fits the moves to the calls. Parents of any teen-ager suffer not only from him, but for him and with him. Much of our suffering comes from the hands-off frustration of not being able to do anything to help him. So much of the help must come from Inside himself, from his readiness and receptivity. But on one type of worry-the teen-ager's appearance, his health and grooming - a parent may safely enlist outside aid and then help the youngster fol low through. Rima's obsession about her faciul birthmark needs two types of attention, dermatolo gical and psychological. But since more and more special ists these days are psychl atrlcally oriented - that is, aware of the psychological factors operating in the con ditions they treat - a visit to one good skin man may suf fice. That "map" Rima de scribes is called a "capillary hemangioma" and we read of miraculous results in remov ing such blemishes by tatoo ing. Teen-agers are reported so Improved that they plunge Into school and social activi ties after one or two treat ments. The point we make is that Rima's anguish can prob ably be eased on the phvsical front, and we urge Mrs. W. to get busy In that direction. As to the emotloiiHl restor ation necessary for Rima's participation In teen age tan gents, we think it's a do it herself possibility. Once her outer appearance is more con trollable, she can summon her Inner beauty, her zest, insight and interests to complete her attractiveness.
