Copco Division Supports U of O Damsite Studies Eugene - Three excavation teams from the University of Oregon will be in the field this summer doing archaeo logical salvage work at dam sites in various parts of the state, according to Dr. L. S. Cressman, head of the depart ment of anthropology. The work is being done under contractual agreements ' with public utilities and a federal agency in compliance with the regulation requiring the salvage of a reasonable sample of archaeological ma terial from areas to be inun dated by dams built under federal license. A six-man team, under the direction of John Wells, grad uate student in anthropology, left Eugene recently for the Salt Caves dam area on the Klamath river Just north of the California-Oregon border. Copco Supported This two-year project, now In its second year, is being supported by a $16,000 grant from the Copco division of the Pacific Power and Ligi" company, Medford, which is constructing the dam. J. C. Boyle, vice president and gen eral manager of the Copco division, is representing the utility company. . Wilbur A. Davis, who re ceived his Ph.D. degree In anthropology from the univer sity earlier this month, is heading a second team which went into the field last week. This group, also numbering six students, will work in the Round Butte dam area near Cove Palisades State park on the Deschutes river. They are in trie second year of a $17,064, two-year contract with "Portland Gen eral Electric company, build- ers of the dam, represented by Waldemar Seton, vice president. David L. Cole, curator of . the University Museum of Natural History, will head the third team, numbering 11, . which will leave June 25 for the John Day dam on the rnlumbia river. This is the ' lifth year of an approxi-1 nroiect. which ! will involve excavation along both sides of the Columbia for 75 miles from the John Day upstream to McNary dam. . , They are currently work ing under an $11,500 grant irom the National Park Serv ice, which supervises arch aeological salvage work , on federally built dams. Each team will be in the field for eight weeks. Dr. Cressman will make inspec tion trips to all excavation sites during the summer. Mrs. Neuberger Refused Mail List Washington -HJPD- Sen. Mau rine B. Neuberger (D-Ore.) said Wednesday the Oregon State Medical society had re fused to let her use its mailing list to poll state doctors on their views on medical care under the Social Security pro- rMrs. Neuberger said her of fice had made it clear that the society would be paid for use of its addressing service, which is open to drug adver tisers and other commercial interests. Lloyd Tupling. Mrs. Neu berger's administrative assist ant, said a listing of Oregon doctors could be obtained from the state capital and be ad dressed here. But he said this would result in greater cost than use of the society's serv ice. Kansas City Zoo Maintains Birthday House for Children Kansas City. Some 800 to 900 youngsters ire expected to have birthday parties this year at the Birth day House, an octagonal build- i Ing in a fairyland setting. TO LAUNCH ROCKET Paris France will use a three-stage rocket to launch Its first satellite, the second European space symposium here was told Tuesday. Rob ert Chevalier, technical di rector of the Society for the Study of Ballistic Missiles, said the satellite rocket will be launched in three years. The salvage operations made necessary by the dam construction have dovetailed with the anthropology depart ment's long-term systematic study of Oregon prehistory, Dr. Cressman pointed out. The first part of this study was done in the high desert country of southeastern Ore gon from which many of the inhabitants moved some 4.(100 to 7,000 years ago when the country became arid. The next step in this study was to find and follow the movements of these early peo ples, working on the theory that they fanned out along the courses of the rivers to ward the Columbia and the ocean, Dr. Cressman said. Salvage archaeology along these rivers has bolstered this theory, although more excava tion and more precise dating, particularly in the area along the Columbia river, is still needed, he observed.
