Ford Assembly Plants To Close for a Week Dallas -fUPIr- Henry Ford II said Thursday that Ford as sembly plants all over the na tion are going to shutdown next Monday for at least a week because of a strike at the company's Cleveland, Ohio stamping plant. The strike in Ohio has caused a parts shortage, and there was a possibility the layoff would last longer than one week. Ford said company and union officials have been negotiating and were contin uing to negotiate. A work standards dispute is at issue in Cleveland, ESSE Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. WATKINS dUfltster end Tribune Syndic 1962) Explode Myih of 'Doctor' Dragonfly There still are folks who think a sick or injured snake has a friend: an insect-angel of mercy that visits them and administers to their needs. This old myth credits the common dragonfly with min istering to a sick snake's wants-the reason for the name "snake-doctor" for the dragonfly. The legend, told to children, and believed by tome adults, records people who actually have seen the dragonflies hovering near an injured snake. The obvious reason why such a superstition should have found listeners probably could be explained by some one observing an injured snake and at the same time the presence of the flying in sects. An injured snake, if the injury occurred some time ago, could be attractive to flies, and the dragonfly could have been there to eat the flies. The observer, of course, allowed his imagination to run away with the idea and the legend was begun. An other snake myth was cre ated. Difficult Tim For the sake of the snakes, it's unfortunate that there is no genuine "snake doctor," for if they ever needed rie. they surely need one now and in the immediate future, for snakes are having a difficult time of it and conditions will get steadily worse. There are instances when persecution hardens a species of plont or animal; makes them wary or toughens them, causing them to become more secretive, but not so the snakes. These creatures are perse cuted so relentlessly it would seem impossible they could survive. The overwhelmingly majority of people kill them on sight, whether they are harmless or poisonous. May Disappear With hardly a possibility of contradiction, it would seem safe to say that the present Hor-aHa Will rnn ih. .mm W vi me siiBKes m most local ities. It is doubtful if snakes are necessary at the present time. Whatever purpose they once served is probably taken care of by other" agencies. The world will go on without re gret when the last one is gone from the earthly scene. Future students a few years hence will have to read about the snake; view mounted specimens or visit a 200. Those students may wor.der why we hated the reptiles so passionately and for so little reason. By that time the squeamish folks will have found something else to hate or to fear and probably will yelp just as loudly for its elimination. IN FAR EAST Storekeeper Third Class Tommy L.
