Rockefeller and sown Engage in Statistics Sacramento, Calif. - IDPB -My state has more new fac tories than your state, said New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller. Oh no it hasn't, my slat can wh'p your state in new factories anytime, answered California Gov. Edmund G. Brown. That, more or less, was the dialogue Saturday in a battle between the governors of the nation's two most populous states. Each man is armed to the teeth with statistics. Rockefeller made his state ment Thursday, saying that more than three times as many new plants have been built or started in New York in the past year than in Cali fornia. Brown answered immedi ately in a letter, whose con tents he released Saturday. After citing Rockefeller's fac tory statement, Brown said: "The reverse is more likely true, although 1 do not be lieve either state has an ac Blair Hits Nilsen With 'Union7 Charge Salpm -HIPP- The Rcpubll can candidate for state labor commissioner, Pat Blair, Sa lem, has charged that Labor Commissioner Norman O. "A comparison of employ, ment shows, however, that between February 1958 and February 1962 the number of wage and salary workers in New York increased by 3.4 per cent while ours increased 14.2 per cent, four times more than New York. In the cate gory of 'manufacturing em ployment,' between 1958-62 New York's employment de clined 3.4 per cent while Cali fornia's Increased by 11.2 per cent," Brown said. Brown seemed especially Irked by Rockefeller's second contention: that California's indebtedness has been "soar ing" while New York's has been dropping. Heathershaw was here on Tuesday, and spoke to t h e state Inter-agency Migratory Labor committee and predict ed passage of at least two of the bills. Blair called the program a "promotional scheme of the New Frontier to sponsor the organization of farm workers in a labor union." Nilsen, a Democrat seeking reelection in November, has not announced publicly any stand on the bills, but Blair said it is apparent that Nilsen supports them. However, a spokesman fur Nilsen said late Friday that Nilsen wrote Rep. Edith Green (D-Ore.) on May 25 expressing some reservations about one of the bills S. 1123 that would affect chil dren under 15. In the letter, which Mrs. Green requested, Nilsen said the provision for a '25 mile restriction on employment of 12 and 13 year olds in the fields should be "re-examin ed" to see whether it would "seriously limit the chances of Oregon residents to partici pate in summer harvest work" The provision would forbid anyone 14 or under from working in a harvest conduct ed 25 or more miles from their home.
