WEDNESDAY. JUNE 13. 19S2 MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON WW' ORCHIDS AT WILDER VILLE This is a scene in Marcel Frost's greenhouse near WiJderville showing some of orchids as they appeared earlier this spring. Marcellus Frost Gaining High Reputation for His Wilderville Orchids his By GENEVIEVE BRIGGS Wilderville - Marcellus P. Frost, whose greenhouse is lo cated near here, has become one of the outstanding hybri dizers of orchids in the Pa cific Northwest. Frost's Interest In orchids started when he went to a flower show In Los Angeles and won a seedling. To house the seedling he built a small greenhouse. He became so fascinated with the culture that he bought more and more. The collection grew, and when Frost moved from Los Angeles to southern Oregon four years ago, to get into clean air and damp winters in which orchids thrive, he brought 1,800 plants with him. This year he had 6.000 blooms which were cut and sold during Easier season. Or chids bloom from February to June. Frost says his greatest thrill is to see a seedling he has painstakingly hybridized open Its face to a world that 'has never sppn ils fnc hp. fore. He speaks of the many times he has gone out with a flashlight at night to see if a particular plant has opened. His most outstanding plant Is Etta Barlow Vanity, a price less one. Others that have made him famous are Lillian Stewart, Balkis Silver Orb and flosan Vanity Pink. Frost entertained the Med- ford Garden club during April, and among other spring visitors was Gordon Hoyt of Seattle, authority on orchids, who was impressed bv the variety and quality of Frost's orchids. The public is also Invited to visit Frost's greenhouse. Regional News CLEVE TWITCHELL, R Correspondents and Their Appier: Mvrtl Krnuse.
