Oregon's Buck Deer Season Will Open on September 29 Portland - IUPII - Oregon's 1962 big game hunting regu lations will be similar to last year's. The general buck deer sea son will open Sept. 29 and run through Oct. 21 and the special permit season for antlcrless deer opens Oct. 6 and closes Oct. 21. A total of 135,600 antlerless permits will be available, an increase of 6.700 over last year. The commission approved three extended deer hunts in the agricultural areas of the Willamette Valley, along the 10 Champs Defend In NCAA National Eugene - IUPII - Ten cham pions will be here to defend their titles this week end in tiie 41st annual NCAA Track and Field meet on Hayward field. And the West Coast is a heavy favorite to win its 27th team title. ' The undefeated Webfoots from Oregon rank as the fa vorites. They have qualified 22 men and defeated South ern California, the defending champion, in a dual meet ear lier in the season. Southern California, with 18 qualifiers, can't be count ed out, nor can San Jose State with 12 entries or Villanova with 10. And Oregon State will have a 15-man delega tion on hand. ,Oregon has two of the re turning champions, miler Dy rol Burleson and high hur dler Jerry Tarr. Both could set NCAA records. Burelson holds the mile record of 4:00.5, but has been well un der that this year. Tarr has bettered the high hurdles mark of 13.6 held by Lee Calhoun. 100 Hot Race Villanova's Frank Budd will attempt to repeat as champion in the 100 and the 220, but he faces classy com petition in Oregon's Harry Jerome, Bob Hayes of Flori da A&M, and Omaha's Roger Sayers, who beat Hayes in the NAIA meet. There als will be 26 controlled seasons, for which 23,000 tags will be issued. The coastal elk season will run from Oct. 27 through Nov. 9 and the season in the rest of the state from Oct. 27 through Nov. 25. The Clat sop unit again will be open only to 5.000 special permit holders. Another 22 permit hunts will be allowed in oth er areas throughout the state. Antelope season will be of New Mexico in the 440, Pat Clohessy of Houston in the three - mile, John Law ler of Abilene Christian in the steeplechase, Dallas Long of USC in the shot put, John Thomas of Boston university in the high jump, Don Mey ers of Colorado in the broad jump, and Dixon Farmer of Occidental in the 440 -yard hurdles. Farmer, however, has been bothered by a leg injury and may pass up the meet. About 300 athletes from 93 schools are entered in the track and field carnival. Friday's schedule includes the three - mile final and pre liminaries in all other events except the 3,000-meter stee plechase. The Saturday program has semifinals in the 100 and high hurdles, plus finals in all events except the three-mile. Funk, Forey, Morris Kart Racing Victors Bud Funk gained first place award for single engines and Dick Florey first for dual engine vehicles Sunday in a 50-lap event at Medford Kart ways on Sunday. Only three karts finished the race. Funk was first and Gary Austin second in A junior racing. Dan Morris was A senior winner with Chet Ayrcs runnerup. In B class it was Florey first and Ron Austin second. Red Bruce was the hard luck man Sunday. He wreck ed an engine on one kart and broke the steering apparatus on another. Rental karts will be at the tracq this Saturday and Sun day from noon on. Bear were classified as game animals in all national forest lands between U.S. Highways 99 and 97 and with in one mile of the Rogue Riv er between Agness and Graves Creek. Open season will be Sept. 1 through Dec. 15, with a bag limit of one. Bear are not protected in other areas of the state. The most important change from earlier tentative regula tions was repeal of a pro posed requirement that hunt ers bring out the entire head of their kill. The commission had receiv ed many protests, mainly from Grant county, that elk hunters would be greatly in convenienced if they had to pack the heavy heads out from deep canyons. The commission amended its tagging regulation to pro write the date, county and spe cies of his kill on the back of his license as soon as he has completed tagging the an imal. Expansion Of Big 5 Rumored 'Victoria, B. C. - IUPII - One persistent rumor, not on the agenda, and routine business matters were expected to keep Big Five athletic directors busy today at their annual spring meeting. The rumor concerns expan sion, principally the addition of Washington State Univer sity, although the Cougars have no representative here. At the opening session Mon day, the directors recommend ed four changes in conference track meets and also set up an agenda for the athletic council which meets Wednes day. The council is composed of the athletic directors and faculty representatives. Firm May Promote Both TV and Fight New York -IUPII- Despite three record bids from out siders, there's more than a 50- 50 chance that Championship Sports, Inc., will promote the closed - circuit television as well as the Floyd Patterson- Sonny Liston fight itself at Chicago, Sept. 25. Ted took both the 18 and under and 16 and under boys' singles and shared the men's doubles title with his broth er, Jim, on the Southern Ore gon college courts. Complete Drag Racing Results Are Announced Complete results were re leased today on last week end's Spring Championship drag races held at the Med ford drag strip by Southern Oregon Timing association. Top honors were swept up by the Shoehorn dragster from Reno, Nev. In doing so they set a new track record for gas cars at 169.59 miles per hour. They are one of two teams in the division from Klam ath Falls. If this year's pat tern is the same as the one for 1961, the Hawks are the No. 2 Legion team of their community.
