Arnold asked to meet me, though, and I certainly have seen a lot of tournaments since then." Within six months they were married, and Arnold made his big decision. "It wasn't as dra matic as people make it," Winnie says. "Arnold was confident he could be successful in golf." Palmer recalls a difficult first year, though. "I won about $8,000 in 1955, about enough for cramped motel rooms and a trailer that broke down. It must have been a rough begin ning for Winnie." But the next year Arnold's winnings rose to $20,000, and in 1957 to $31,000. Winnie admits Arnold brings his work home with him: "You've got to remember, though, that golf is more than our business. For instance, all our friends are in golf, so when we sit around talking, it naturally comes up." The Palmers and their two children, Peggy, 6, and Amy, 3, live in a ranch-style house overlook ing the country club on which Arnold grew up. His parents live a few Palmer-length drives away, and the airport is down the road about a mile. There Arnold keeps his plane in which he com mutes to tourneys. All the Palmers try to get to the tournaments. After this year's Masters, some of them had trouble getting to Arnold through all his well wishers. "Where are they?" he asked his agent. "Did they see me on that back nine?" Also, I'm going to see if I can't renew my acquaintance with Nikita Khrushchev. When he came here in 1959, I got close enough to tap him on the back. Only one thing might change my plans. At a party recently, I struck up a conversation with a girl. She stared at me with a puzzled expression, then said, "I've seen your face somewhere." Before I could answer, she stabbed her finger at me excitedly. "I know you. You're the gate crasher." Then she whipped out an autograph book and said, "May I have your autograph?" That was the first time anybody ever asked me for my autograph. If this kind of thing continues, I may have to start giving parties of my own. And believe me, no one will crash them.
