i . I w 3. TO EXPLORE UNIVERSE Peaceful Hat Creek Valley In eastern Shasta county, California, has sprouted these two futuristic instruments for radio exploration of the uni verse. The 33-foot dish at the left and the 85-foot one at the right are now in full operation at the University of California s radio astronomv laboratory. Radio receivers and control devises are located in laboratory buildings adjacent to each telescope. The project is largely supported under contract with the U.S. Office of Naval Research. (UPI) Much To Be Desired m a I I I.i Kose by Any umer name mmm Very Well Smell Like Petunia Bv DICK WEST Washington - HJPIl - The other day, as a public service, I undertook to explain how tstes got nis name. My main point was that when it comes to christen- .j&il ing their sons, Texas parents generally are more progres- wm s i v e than those in other states. This assertion was prompt ly challenged by a native of Louisville, who claimed that he had a boyhood chum named Joe Joseph Josephs. Jackson 773-7718 STATE FARM Fife and Casually Co. Home Office: Bloomington, Illinois lieve I am on sound ground in saying that, by and large, the practice of name-giving in this country leaves much to be desired. The national altitude to ward personal names con forms to the familiar Shake speare quotation: What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." The implication is that names really don't matter. But is that true? A rose by another name might very wcli smell like a petunia. I have before me a clipping from the legal notices in a local newspaper. It advises that a woman has filed appli cation in district court.to change her name from "Julie Lee Marsh" to "Sincere De termination." I'm inclined to think that when Julie Lee legally be comes Sincere Determination she also will become a better person. Most of the first names used in America are prosaic and dull, but all have, mean ings which if used as names, would give our nomenclature freshness and color. For instance, John, which is one of the most over worked names in America, means "God's gracious love." Wouldn't that make a fine name for a Presi dent? Roger Blough of U.S. Steel might not agree, but he also would stand to benefit. If his parents had named him "Spear of Fame," rather than Roger, steel prices today might be six cents a ton higher. There is, however, no guar antee that an infant will fit his name when he grows up. I have a daughter named Rebecca, which means "firm." That doesn't suit her at all. It turned out that her chief char acteristic is asking questions. If I had known when she was born what I know now, I would have named her "Constant Interrogation," which is almost as lovely a name as "Sincere Determina tion" or Billie Sol." Iowa Woman Seeks Information of Son The Mcdford city police de partment has received a letter from an Iowa woman seeking information of her son whom she has not heard from since 1957. Mrs. Hazel Milton, co R. Marnell, route 2, Moville, Iowa, said the last she knew of her son, Kenneth Marnell, he was reported to be living in the Medford area. She urges anyone who may have information of her son's whereabouts to write her at the above address. Winema Roads Said Improved in Week Klamath Falls Road con ditions on the Winema Na tional forest continued to im prove this week, with most roads now being passable ex cept those in the high country and through wet meadows. On the north end of the forest, Miller Lake Camp, grounds are closed, with Mil ler Lake trail to Maidu lake being blocked by deep snow. On the Klamath district, Rainbow creek road is open as far as Rainbow Springs. Aspen Point campground is closed temporarily while ex pansion is under way. Rain bow campground is open to the public and was used by a number of people over last week end. The road between Lake of the Woods and Fish lake is open, but rough. The East Billie Creek road, which turns off from the Dead Indian highway northeast of Lake of the Woods, has been plowed to Fourmile lake. There is snow around Four mile lake. The Mountain lakes wild area and Sky Lakes areas are still covered by snow. Communists End Summit Meeting Moscow HJPII The Com munist economic summit con ference ended Thursday after j two days of talks between So-1 viet Premier Nikita Khrush-1 chev and the leaders of six Soviet bloc nations. Tass, the Soviet news agen cy, announced the end of the conference but made no ref- i crence to a closing commu- i nique or details of the dis-1 cussions. 1 Albania was banned from the conference and its ally in the ideological dispute with Moscow, Communist China, did not send its usual ob server delegation. The ab sence of China and Albania Indicated that the Moscow Peiping feud occupied a high place on the agenda, along side the economic problems for which the conference was called .
