Adrian's aalary, (or a man nf 35 with a wife and one child, would be con sidered "average." I believe we're called "middle-income" citizens. Yet, we still live in the apartment we moved into, as newlyweds ten years ago at a $60-a-month rental, despite the fact that I'm sure we can afford to pay twice that and have a more comfortable ' home. What troubles me is Ad rian's tightness wjth money. He doles out a fixed amount for my house-money. Any-' thing extra that I want for'' myself or for our son requires a petition as elaborate as if I ' were asking Congress for a battleship. To comfort me he shows me how our bank bat ance is growing. I'd like a little less bal- ' ance and a little more on my ' side of the deal. Otherwise it's almost as bad as nonsupport-' ' maybe I d better get myself a job that pays. e Adrian H. Fay is one ot those shortsighted and blind wives for whom security doesn't rate. They want show.' ' They'd rather eat, drink, dress : up and be merry, even If takes their husbands' last cent.1 As to having money in reserve to : pay taxes, doctor bills or to help out a relative in trouble, ? they call this "tightness." I'm : sorry. I call it common sense. ; That bank account she ' makes fun of came in mighty handy when her mother need-. led $500 in a hurry for an' .; operation. If I left things up -, to Fay It wouldn't have been. , on hand. She'd go through . twice my salary each week with her big eyes ana Dig . ideas. I feel I'm a good provider, but Fay wants me to double. expenditures each month-...,. That would be Tisky and I'm , not rich enough lor Tlsks. , .. The Couneili We can't let '; slip Fay's threat to get herself . . a "job that pays." We hope , she realizes she already has . one, even though It pays In different currency than the I coin of the rpalmf Her job as Adrian's side-kick might well be envied by women wno : . know the pains of the in- , solvent, the dread knock on the door that means eviction -or repossession of furnishings. But Fay is doing more "kick" , ing" than "siding" and well., trv to show her, as well as , Adrian, ways to turn her into .. a proper side-kick. The couple's aimtunr , springs from, disharmony hmit enals. If thev agreed on where they were headed. Fay would accept without : argument the allocation of each dollar to tne varioue ; kitties" which help them r-, rive there. Obviously Know-.-- ing little about budgeting sna v. money management, ray av-; tributes Adrian's conservation t to cussedness. And he, certain that women have no head for s financial explanations, makes. , one-side decisions and hands... them down to Fay, as the. Supreme Court would do. Adrian's first-aid move to;,', mend Fay's fractured trust In him would be to take her . Into his confidence on plan ' , for their future security. With X-expenses and X-dreams, how. . split up Y-income each monthT .., Listen to her ideas. With th.'.; i oh. laid on the table will , she still feel they can afford double the icnt7 it so, ner . recommendation will be more knowledgeable and may well be combined witn ner own.:, scheme for cutting downy, somewhere else. Expenditures;-, would be discussed intelligent. " ly, not decided by Adrian's r- bitrary fiat. ; Next he might patiently try to expand Fay's grasp of all matters of household finance Including taxes, Insurance and ' , legal documents. The more i" wife knows of the hard facts ' about money, the closer not ' "Hffhter" she and her hus-. band can be. The relationship., tends to be shoulder-to-should-; er rather than Big Daddy': Weak Mommy. J'- Finally, this couple might . bear in mind the four stage .' of earning as defined by ' modern economist: first, for'--. Aim survival: scconu, "r ixt I kl . t- i. ihtrrl fnr a J luxuries buucu - - Vi li 1 modicum of freedom (such is- L; a chance to quit a Job or xr change a vocation); and, iinat- ly, for power (usaoie tor gooa or, alas, nefarious causes)' Adrian seems to be neanng ' the second plateau. While he dike most of us) may never' reach the others Fay should rejoice, for he also may never . have to return to the first on.. : 1 (?)
