The coaches were tied in their choice for first base be tween Paul Tomlinson, Wash ington State University and Mike Stowe, Idaho. Other choices were second base - Dave Moore, Oregon; shortstop - Zeke Blocklnger, WSU; outfielder - Bob Walk er, WSU; Cal Dean, Oregon, and Dick Mooncy, Idaho. COMMERCIAL CREDIT PLAN Sprint I'm stronger and that's why I am having a better year. It s because of maturity. I don't mean only physical maturity but mental maturity, too. I m adjusting better to academic work. Jerome had done only one 9.3 before this spring. "I think it's only a matter of time before I get down to 9.2," he added. "But I'm not particularly worried about my times just as long as I win." Holds Meter Mark The 8-foot, 170-pound Van couver athlete, who doesn't think the damp Pacific North west is a deterrent to his run ning, also is the co-holder of the world's record in the 100 meter dash at 10 seconds flat. He turned in the effort in 1960 in Canada. And last month, in the same meet in which he beat Hayes, he teamed with three Oregon hurdlers to tie the world's record in the 440-yard relay at 40 seconds flat. Texas set the mark at 1957. It was his anchor leg that led to victory and the record equaling time. Jerome has a tremendous start and a brilliant finish but he doesn't think there's any strong point to his sprinting ability. "I try to do every thing well, he said. Which race does he like best? 'The 220," he answered. "I just like the distance better." In addition to the NCAA meet, the Oregon star has sev eral other goals. He will compete for Canada in the British Empire Games at Perth, Australia, in Novem ber. And he is pointing to the 1984 Olympic Games. After college, Jerome wants to coach and do government work in Canada. St. Luke's Still Unbeaten in Church Softball St. Luke's Methodist re mained unbeaten in the YMCA church Softball league by coming from behind to score a 10 to 4 victory over First Nazarene at McLough- lin field Monday night. Dave Jordan pitched hitlcss ball for St. Luke's until he gave up a home run to Dave Gardner and a single to Ren nie Vowell in the sixth in ning. After walking two con secutive batters in the sev enth, Jordan gave way to Denny Pugmire, who gave up two hits before retiring the side. Gardner got two hits in two times at bat. Pugmire topped St. Luke's hitters with three for three and John Hay had two for four. n ii r St. Luke's .030 241 01(1 0 1 Nazarene 100 001 2 4 4 3 Jordan. Pltcmlra 171 and Weaver: Qualli and Gohle. OREGON Koufax Fans 13 As LA Stops Phils By NOHMAN MILLER UPI Sports Writer Twice during his career Sandy Koufax strained his manager's patience to the breaking point, and now for his forbearance skipper Walt Alston of the Los Angeles Dodgers is being rewarded with the best National League strikeout pitching since Dazzy Vance. Koufax struck out 13 bat ters Monday night in pitching the Dodgers to a three-hit, 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. It was the only game played in the major leagues and it moved the Dodgers to within two games of the first place San Francisco Giants. This was the fourth straight game in which Koufax struck out 10 or more batters and it raised his season total to 123 whiffs. At this rate, the 28-year-old lefthander could sur pass Vance's 262 strikeouts in 1924 and the league record of 267 set by Christy Mathew son in 1903. Not Always So All this fine flinging makes Koufax mighty popular with Alston these days, but it wasn't always thus. As late as 1960, when Kou fax had an 8-13 record, Alston was beginning to wonder if he'd ever learn how to con trol his blazing fastball. "Koufax is a mystery," Al ston lamented. "He can't throw anything but one kind of ball-a high one. "Still, you can't give up on him." Monday night's triumph, made easier by the homers by Wally Moon and John Rose- JW Loggers Defeat GP John Wheeler Logging of Medford took 8 to 1 and 1 to 0 Softball victories from the Grants Pass Elks Sunday as pitchers Vern Collins and Mi lan Kurtz tossed one-hitters. The pitcher aided his own winning cause by getting a hit in the sixth inning. Jack Dier was sent in to run for him. With two oul, Fuz McCay was safe at first and Dier reached third on a dropped third strike. Don Jacobson then slashed a hot single to score Dier. The Loggers will play the defending state champion Randall's Chuck Wagon team of Salem in a twinbill on Sat urday night at Memorial field, White City.
