9 jhjhXMja. . . 0 HE returned from his vacation as pale as he left. "My wife and 1 were going to paint the house instead of taking a trip," he explained. "We had two whole weeks to get it done, and it's not a very large house. "The first day of my vacation, though, I de cided I'd go to the doctor and have him fix my sore toe. He said it was an ingrown toenail. "I could hardly walk at all after he worked on it, but my wife and I started on the house anyway. It was pretty hard to get up the ladder on one foot, but I made it. We were scraping and sanding the boards before we put on the primer coat. "By Wednesday, my toe hurt so bad I had to go back to the doctor. He said he guessed he didn't get all the scraping done, so he scraped some more. "The next day, while, protecting my toe, I stepped on the ladder and threw my kneecap out of joint. That hurt quite a lot more than the toe and, besides, it was the other leg. "QO I decided I'd let my wife use the ladder lO and I'd stay down around the foundation and scrape the siding along the bottom. On the first board, I scraped out a wasp's nest. A wasp stung my hand so badly it swelled up to twice normal size. I had to quit working on the house that day, too. "Finally, by the end of the week, we had the house ready for the primer coat. I took my wife out to dinner to celebrate. That was when I lost the filling out of my tooth and had to take time off last Monday to go to the dentist. "But it rained that night, so we had to let the sun dry out the house the next day before we could start painting. "Then it rained the next night, too, so we lost another day. If you remember, it rained most of the week. We never even started painting the house. There it sits with the paint off and not another thing done to it. "And here I am back from vacation with a sore toe and an aching knee and a sore jaw and a swollen hand. "I've asked the boss never to give me another vacation. It's not worth it."
