SUNDAY. JUNE 3. 1962 MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON ax Commission B Mails 54 Refund Checks via Story Salem - With the assistance of the Mail Tribune, the State Tax Commission has been able to deliver 54 Income tax refund checks it had previous ly been unable to get to per sons who had given Jackson county addresses on tax re turns. This represents 36 per cent of the 151 unclaimed checks listed. Using the statewide average of $13 per unclaimed check, this means that more than $700has been returned to per sons who otherwise might not have received refunds to which they were entitled, the tax commission noted. The 36 per cent recovery for Jackson county is excel lent, Tax Commission officials said, since the statewide aver age at this time is approxi mately 17 per cent. However, some areas in Oregon are now being covered in the newspa per campaign to return the tax money to its rightful own ers. At present, the state total of unclaimed refunds deliv- ered is 814 from a beginning total of 4,800. The Tax Commission re ported that changes of name and address among women who marry or become di vorced, other changes of ad dress without notice to the commission.e rroneous ad dresses, and postal service failure are the main reasons why fhe refunds were not de livered in the year of issue. The list went back to the 1954 tax year. However, in some uses the taxpayer himself was not aware that he had a check coming, the refund being the result of Tax Comm'ission auditing, and by the time the refund was mailed, he had moved without leaving a for warding address. Undei state law, unclaimed checks are held for seven years, after which the money goes into the state's general fund, requiring an act of the Legislature to get it back. Faraway Place The Jackson county list published in the Mail Tribune brought responses from such faraway places as Dos Palos, La Puento, Sacramento, Ingie wood, Pacoima, Leggett and Gasquet, all in California; Og den and Salt Lalse City, bth in Utah; Overton, Nev.; West minster, Colo.; Fariingt, N. M.; Dallas, Twc.t id Hon olulu, Hawaii. The latter was from a soldier stationed there. The letter from Salt Lake CItv was from a former Med- ford couple whose refund was $101-highest yet delivered on the Jackson county "missing persons" list. One rather confusing letter was from Vancouver, Wash., Irf which a man reported that his address had been erron eously listed as Ashland in stead of Medford and that he an his wife now lived in Port land. The Tax Commission em phasized that claimants were requested to send in ttieic so cial security nxmWers sd some means f ldenficaio. One man wsd cc9 changes.
