Hospital officials said at least one of the 70 injured passengers was not expected to survive and several others were reported in serious con dition. The accident occurred Thursday morning when a speeding freight train ran through a red stop signal and smashed into the rear of a crowded Milan - Genoa pas senger train about to leave for the Italian Riviera. The Italian state - owned railways system and the gov ernment launched investiga tions to determine how the freight train raced through the stop signal and entered the station at a speed of 43 miles an hour. The engineer and his assist ant, who leaped clear just seconds before the crash, were questioned by police. They fled the disaster scene and hid for eight hours be fore turning themselves in. Minuti From Medford on Crater Leki Highway Feeding the Family By ZOLA Food Famed Party Sandwich Loaf Recipe Repeated When several people are party-planning, some one ii certain to ask "Does anyone know how to make one of those sandwich loaf things? Now, you will know ... if you clip this out and have it handy. Figure a loaf for each 10 servings. Trim crust from day-old loaf of unsliced bread. Cut lengthwise Into four even slices. Spread first slice with Ham Filling, second with Liver Filling, third with Tongue Filling. Place one on top the other and top with remaining bread slice. Frost with Sandwich Frosting, Ham Filling. Combine and mix thoroughly one small can ham spread, two table. spoons chopped stuffed olives, one-half teaspoon prepared mustard and one tablespoon mayonnaise, Liver Filling. Combine one small can liver paste, one- half teaspoon minced onion, one tablespoon mayonnaise and one chopped hard-cooked egg. Tongue Filling. Combine one small can tongue spread, two tablespoons chopped pickle and one tablespoon mayonnaise. Sandwich Frosting. Cream four three-ounce packages of cream cheese. Add one-third to one-half cup light cream, blending until spreading con sistency. Frost top and sides of loaf. Decorate in flower designs with green pepper, radish slices, pimicnto, water cress or other colorful notion. Revel in Berry Bounty Gather ye berries while ye may. Western berries are many and wonderful. Straw berries are beckoning from every fruit stand. Raspberries are ripening red and black in nearly-summer sunshine. Blue berries, Loganberries, Youngberries and Boysenber ries are increasing in supply right along with July peaks ahead. Enjoy berries "as is", with cream, with half-and-half, with dairy sour cream. Treat the family to pies, cobblers and shortcakes. Fill those bakery-bought pastry and cake shells with them. Spices and Herbs Put Pep in Cooking A starter group of from five to ten spices and herbs makes a wonderful "shower" gift for the bride-elect. Add to these another ten or so interesting spices and herbs and a pepper mill and you have an elegant wedding present. Spices and herbs are such a relatively inexpensive way to add interest and flavor ex citement to food that one should replace them often to keep the spices spicy and the herbs pungent. If in doubt as to freshness, let your nose be your guide. The following 34 spices and herbs are most often used, ac cording to the Spice Trade Association with which this foods writer visited in New York one day last week. Allspice, Anise, Basil, Bay leaves. Caraway seeds, Cey ennc (red pepper) Celery seed, Celery Salt, Chili Peppers, Chili Powder, Cinnamon, Cloves, Coriander, Cumin seed. Curry powder. Dill, Fen nel, Ginger, Mace, Marjoram, Mustard, Nutmeg. Then there's Oregano, Paprika, Par sley, Pepper (black and white and also mixed), Poppy seeds, Rosemary, Sage, Savory, Sesa me seed, Tarragon, Thyme, Tumeric. Now might be a good time to check on your own sup plies. Be sure they're stored away from heat, away from light; both of which are detri mental to spices and herbs. South of Border Quick Dish A main dish as full of pep as a Mexican hat dance. Spoon hot canned chili con came with beans over hot canned tamalcs. Crisp crack ers and a tossed green salad are nice additions. For des-, sert, perhaps a pineapple up side down cake made with i your favorite cake mix and canned pineapple slices. FOR SALE BY OWNER 3bdrm., excellent condition 4 yr. eld heme, kitehtn-aid dishwasher, covered pitio, drapes, new paint. Lot 72'x 137'. FHA appraised. Phone 772-4905 VINCENT Editor Stuffed Celery Cheese-stuffed celery is tops in popularity on the appetizer tray; especially popular with men. Give your cream cheese mix a new flavor with ground oregano leaves added conser vatively (take It easy) to taste. Go Picnicking with Handy Piper Products Now that the picnic season is getting under way, it is a good time to inventory paper and other disposables tor use in the cooking-and-serving-outdoor department. Lighten summer work by putting in supplies of paper bags and towels, waxed paper, trans parent plastic wrap and alu minum foil. The lidded con tainers in various sizes are ideal for storing, transporting and picnic-tabling salads, des serts and ' other prepared foods. Plan picnic color schemes for special events just as you do for Indoor meals with matched sets of paper plates, cups for hot or cold soups and beverages, napkins and table cloth. Plastic forks, knives and spoons are mighty handy too. Beit Buys Market-Wise If you are looking for a bar gain in protein, i.'.ach for eggs. They are in abundance and frequently found marked at very special prices. In the same category broiler-fryers and turkeys continue to hold their own. Canned meats and tuna are convenient and in expensive fare for picnicking and quick at-home meals. Ground beef and frankfurters for broiling and barbecueing will star on many a menu. Dairy Products. Since June is Dairy Month, milk and dairy products top the U.S. Department of Agriculture's official listing of Plentiful Foods for the coming month. Stocks of milk and dairy prod ducts are the largest in five years, and retail prices on a number of products are lower than a year ago. Fruit displays give every indication that summer is practically here. This does not necessarily infer that our summer berries and fruits are at harvest peak, but many are in with the promise of more to come at better and better prices. Strawberries could hardly be prettier or sweeter tasting than they are right now. Raspberries, Boysenber rics and others are putting in their appearances. Cantaloup and watermelon supplies are on the increase. Best buys in fruits are avocados; apples, bananas, oranges and grape fruit. Some figs, grapes and peaches are available: Fresh vegetable buys: As paragus prices are on the downward swing. Cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, potatoes, onions, zucchini squash and bunched vegetables are well priced.
