MYLER United Prssi International Washington IUPU - For a while scientists thought they had lost a river larger than 1,000 Mississippis. But it turned out that the river gigantic Cromwell cur rent embedded in the Pacific wasn't really lost. It merely had made a sharp left turn. The story is told in the publication. Naval Research Reviews. The Cromwell cur rent, discovered in 1951, is a submerged stream which flows eastward along the equa tor. It "moves millions of tons of water, more than flows in a thousand Mississippi rivers," the Navy publication says. Scientists of the Scripps In stitution of Oceanography traced the river from the Western Pacific to tfie Gala pagos Islands, which sit astride the equator. Vanishes From Map There, says naval research reviews, it "simply vanished from the map." This was puzzling, if true. John A. Knauss, a Scripps oceanographer who made ex tensive studies of the Crom well current three years ago, revisited it recently aboard the research vessel Argo. He discovered that the cur rent does not disappear at the Galapagos Islands. Instead, it veers to the north, returning to the equator later on the eastern side of the islands. This does away with one mystery. The Cromwell cur rent still has others. Oceanic rivers aren't new. There are the Gulf stream in the At lantic, for example, and the California current. Makes Climate Better The Gulf stream carries warm water from its region of origin far to the north. It is credited with making the British climate better than it has any right to be, consider ing how far north the British Isles are. The California current can be identified sometimes by the sea creatures which live in it but not on either side. The Cromwell current wa ters, however, do not differ to any great extent from those to its right or left. It is not notably warmer or cooler than the stay - at - home waters through which is moves. Crea lures found in the current are of the same kind that live outside. Presumably the Cromwell current's existence has some thing to do to with its equa torial location. The Galapagos Islands divert it only momen tarily. Knauss thinks drops of wa ter caught in the current stay there only briefly. "Although the current trav. els across the entire Pacific ocean along the equator, it seems possible," he says, "that any given water particle trav els only a relatively short dis tance within the current."
