MAY 27. 1362 Clup Selects Nominating Committee Ashland - Preceding Ihe regular afternoon program of Ashland Study club May 21 a business session was conduct ed by the president. Mrs. R. Drew Lamb, in which a nomi nating committee, was chosen and a new member, Mrs. Clif ford Maust, was welcomed. Hostess for the meeting was Mrs Harry Skerry Jr., 580 Morton street. Mrs Harold Merrill review ed "The Inheritors" by John Tebble, a study based upon outstanding Americans of wealth. The Astors. the Gug genheims, Barbara Button and Doris Duke, and the late Wil liam Randolph Hearst are all analyzed. The Astor fortune built from fur trading and the Gug genheimer empire established by Meyer the peddler and carried on by seven sons with the golden touch, were among the earliest of the vast for tunes amassed in America. With their wealth came power and position, but in few cases happiness. The author asks the ques tion "What will history a cen tury from now tell of todav's moneyed families?" Whether accumulated or inherited for tune is a responsibility and often a tragedy. Study of Roses The selected subject pre sented by Mrs. Ruth Dews was in keeping with the sea son and her own hobby as a rose fancier. The garden of Mrs. Dews and her mother, Mrs. Grace Turner, attracts visitors each summer when their hundreds of roses are in bloom. Mrs. Dews says that the rose is an international flower, being found in all parts of the world regardless of climate, the only exception bcine a small part of South America, i The rose has played an impor-! tant role in history for cen turies. Its influence is seen in music, art. romance, in names of places and people, in adorn ments and stained glass win dows. Secret documents were once placed under a rose, giving rise to the legal term "sub rosa " The rose has been used medicinally but is loved most for its perfume and beautiful form. The speaker showed colored illustrations and gave suggestions on rose culture, closing with a poem "My Favorite Rose." The final meeting of the club year will be at 1 p.m. luncheon June 4 at the home of Mrs. Len Osgood, 720 Walker avenue. Texas Visitors m, t? 1 Eagle Point Couple Honored at Reception A large number of Republicans attended the annual tea of the Jackson County unit of the Oregon Federation of Women's Republican clubs held May 21 at the home of Mrs. George M. Mrs. Davies was president of the Garden club for two years; helped organize the Home Extension unit in Eagle Point in 10112, belonged to the Grange and Civic Improve ment club; and worked to get health service organized in Eagle Point. She is an officer of the Eagle Point Lions auxiliary and has worked in oilier civic organizations throughout the years. The Lions auxiliary presented Mrs. Davies with a white orchid.
