painlessly have burned off a
"pre-cancerous" polyp with
very hot electric sparks.

There is now help available
for hundreds of mothers who
have written me saying they
have a handicapped child, and
they don't know where to turn
for help. Mrs. Mildred P.

that any parent of a handicap
ped child who will write her
will be put in touch with the
nearest unit of the National
Association for Retarded Chil
dren. There, the mother can
receive the great help and
comfort that comes from talk
ing with other parents of han
dicapped children.
The National Association is
constantly watching out for
new ways of helping handi
capped children. They are
studying also the happenings
or illnesses during the moth
er's pregnancy or during her
confinement which might
cause an injury to the unborn
child.

Even in the crowded world
of the motlusks, and in spite
of the oyster's and clam's pop.
ularity, the heart-cockle shell
stands out like a tore thumb
One valve, or a single shell
of this bivalve may become
a baking dish, or an ash-tray
that some visitor to an ocean
beach may buy in a curio
shop.
Unlike the stay-at-home-oyster,
the cockle gets around
in a limited way. It travels
through the water In a series
of jerks and sudden stops.
This mode of travel is slower
than a snail's pace.
The cockle travels by a
hook and jump procedure,
reaching out its single, strong
"foot ' as far as possible, it
then twists itself to one side
and succeeds in throwing it
self a few inches: it doesn't
seem to care whether it pro
gresses forwards, sideways or
backwards.
Always Cartful
This maneuver is resorted
to when food becomes scarce.
It would much prefer to re
main quietly buried in the
sandy bottom, in the ocean,
being always careful that it
never approaches too close to
shore, remaining in shallow
water.
If washed shoreward it falls
on its faceless shell, and dies
in the sun. This happens fre
quently; some beaches are
strewn with cockle shells aft
er a severe storm has stirred
up the sea.
At such times the cockle
shells are gathered by the ton.
and sold for ash trays, or as
small baking dishes.
The cockle shells are pretty
well distributed throughout
the warmer waters of the
world's oceans. The two
valves of the shell are equal
size, held together by a
cleverly constructed hinge
that holds the two sections
even after the animal body is
removed. The outer edges of
the vhIvcs are deeply notched,
the notches fitting snugly, ef
fectively closing the she 11
when the animal is alarmed.
Broad Ribs
Each valve has broad, radi
ating ribs, all regularly spac
ed. Some cockle shells are five
inches across: viewed from the
side, the shell is heart-shaped.

Too, there are places in the
world where the flesh of this
mollusk is considered to be
equal to the oyster or clam, in
eating qualities.
The inside of the cockle
shell is highly polished, some
are beautifully marked with
contrasting colors, the pre
dominant color being yellow,
low seas has not been estab
lished, unless it is destined to
be an ash-tray, or baking dish.
