At times, for reasons that are not clear, the blood will clot in a blood vessel and especially in a segment of an artery In which the lining is no longer glassy smooth, as It should be, but rough and ulcerated, or perhaps narrow ed by degenerative changes in the wall. We doctors speak of arlerio. sclerosis, which means a hard ening of the artery, and per haps some narrowing of its lumen (inside diameter), or we speak of atherosclerosis, by which we mean an ulceration or a "plaque" (flat nodule) formation on the inner lining of the artery. If we can keep the blood from clotting in a thickened or narrowed or ul cerated artery, the tube may go on functioning well enough for years. How do we keep the blood from clotting too easily? Years ago, 1 read in a veteri nary magazine that many cat tle were dying from eating "spoiled clover." and that autopsies on the animals showed that their blood would not clot. As a result, the ani- mals bled to death - often internally. The minute I read this, I took the article to a chemist friend of mine, and said, "Quick, find out what fraction of the spoiled clover does that, and soon you will give us doctors a very valu able medicine." But my friend was one of these "So What" fellows who could not get up any excite ment over the discovery, and so he did nothing. Another chemist with more discern ment quickly extracted the active substance, and found It belonged to a group of chemi cals called coumarins. Blood experts soon found Hint it acted by lengthening what is called the prothrom bin time. Prothrombin is a substance which has to do with the clotting of blood. Hence, it is that before a man starts taking one of the cou marins. he should go to a laboratory and have his "pro thrombin 1 1 m e" measured. Then, for a few months after WALT'S TVsTE10 "Oldest Shop in So. Oregon 2300 So. Stsqe Rd. 772-2269 Serving Medford and Vicinity Calls Monday Thru Thursday 8 A.M. to 6 P.M.
