OREGON Death Brings End To Love Triangle Of Korean War San Francisco - DPI) - Death has slowed the final curtain on the drama of Daniel and Una Schmidt - a story of an airman who returned from the Korean war to find his wife, ' believing him dead, married ' to another man. ; An isolated paragraph in a logger's magazine reported - that Daniel C. Schmidt, 31, " died on the operating table at Fort Miley Veterans Hospital May 9 while undergoing open : heart surgery. The hospiftl ' confirmed his death. Bomber Shot Down Schmidt went to Korea as -.an Air Force gunner, leaving - behind his wife, Una, who : gave birth to their son, Danny - Jr., five'weeks later. In 1952 - his B-29 was shot down over . North Korea. He spent 32 months in a .'Red Chinese prison. '. Sammy Jack Robertson, 21, 1-of Houston, Miss., and C. L. ,-Chattick, held as a hostage by Robertson, were fatally -wounded in a hail of bullets. Robertson's wife, Sue, 19, was critically wounded dur ing the firing. The pretty brunette drove the getaway car in which the couple fled with Chatlick as a hostage after holding up his store. Robertson, who hod served a prison term for auto theft, and his wife walked into the country grocery Wednesday afternoon. Robertson pulled a gun on Chattick's wife, who was attending the store, and demanded money. Mrs. Chattlck said "the girl emptied the cash drawer into a hat" and the couple took her husband as a hostage when a customer appeared on the scene. The customer saw the gun in Robertson's hand and telephoned the police. The getaway car crashed through three roadblocks in a hail of bullets. When the car was finally halted by state highway patrolmen Mrs. Rob ertson fell from behind the wheel. She had been shot four or five times. Robertson and Cattick were dead in the back seat. Officers said they did not know if Robertson killed Chattick or if he was killed by a police bullet. Mrs. Rob ertson was rushed to a hos pital where her chances of re covery were reported (o be slim. They were reunited in Port land, Ore. The Schmidts and their Enoch Arden loye Jlory then diopped out of the news. They rec ords showed that Schmidt di vorced Una in 1960 and mar ried h'in. He and his wife had been living in Shasta county, and were the parents of a 7-month-old boy. From Schmidt'i relatives in Montgomeiaj Creek, Calif., came still another twist to the strange story - Una, too had remarried. Schmidt's death was given one lonely paragraph in the Shasta Spotlite, a logging magazine published in Red ding, where he worked for a plywood mill. Fishing Industry Assistance Asked Washington -WPB- Sen. Ben jamin A. Smith (D-Mass.) to day called for a federal aid for fisheries program as ex tensive as that given agricul ture. Smith said the industry is suffering from a "backward ness of technology" and needs to modernize to help the United States catch up with Russia in world fishery production. Smith said "the march of technology, which has trans formed agriculture and so many other industries, as haftly brushed ur fisheries." In a prepared senate speech, Smith said "American fish eries desperately need, to nodernize and this moderniza tion can not take place with out the help of the federal government." The bnby was found wrapped in two blankets on the floor of an unoccupied classroom behind the scats in the last row. Its cries were heard hy visitors passing from the eighth floor classroom en route to visit patients. At tendants said if visitors had not heard the child she might not have been found until Wcdnesda morning.
