o o Trailer Breaks From Car Pulling It A two-wheel trailer broke loose from the car pulling it Sunday afternoon, rolled across the street and crashed Into an oncoming car, accord ing to Medford police. The trailer was being towed by Maurice Amesden Ritchey, 49, of 412 Oak St., Medford It struck a vehicle driven by Austia Vera Barneburg, 63, of 1297 Sunset ave. Under the act, which be comes effective June 28, phy sicians will have a legal right to sterilize adult patients, men or women, who request it. The operation can be per formed only after: -The patient has been given a full explanation of the con sequences. -The physician has brought the patient in consultation with another doctor. -The patient has had 30 days to think over the oper ation. Sponsors of the new mea sure said physicians should have legal protection to steri lize patients who wish to cease having children. The new law exempts physicians from civil suit as the result of a volun tary sterilization. Several physicians testified at public hearings in the legis lature that they had sterilized many women who wished to cease bearing children. One physician said one of every 27 women who gave birth in his hospital later asked to be steri lized. Chief opposition to the meas ure came from Roman Cathol ic organizations which con tended the proposal violated natural law against mutila tion. State Sen. John A. K. Don ovan, attacking the bill on the senate floor, said Virginia would become the first state to permit sterilization without cause. Victor Wickersham, 14-year congres sional veteran, and state Rep. J. M. Ballard for a congres sional nomination. Wickersham led by 1,266 votes in the unofficial tally and a recount was virtually certain in both races. None of the candidates would concede. Students Asked To File School Forms Boys and girls, ages IS, 16 and 17, are urged to file ap plications for the youth aquatic school in Red Cross office, 60 Hawthorne ave., Medford, by Friday, May 25. The water -safety training course will be held June 10 through 16 at Southern Ore gon college, and will be given jointly by Jackson and Klam ath basin Red Cross chapters. A below-cost fee will be charged students to cover board, room, tuition and text books. A qualified faculty, all serving as Red Cross volunteers, includes Granville Thomas, National Red Cross volunteer, chairman of the small craft program at the San Francisco chapter and staff member of the PE de partment, San Francisco State college; department heads and faculty members of PE de partment, Southern Oregon college, and volunteer instruc tors from Jackson and Klam ath basin chapters. Junior life-saving, senior life-saving, water safety aide (instructor's assistant), basic boating (rowboats and mo tors), basic canoeing, and first aid (standard and ad vanced) will be taught at the session. Edward Day, in office a year, is de termined that machines will not be allowed to destroy mo rale of the 580,000 post of fice employees. He made this clear in his j hours from 5 to 9 p.m first annual report to Presi dent Kennedy. The report rec ognized that the era of auto mation - machines replacing men - is here to stay. But Day said this would not be permitted to "overshadow improved human relations." Projects also were started Pre-First Graders To Visit Roosevelt Pre -school visitation for students entering Roosevelt school next fall will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, the school has an nounced. Next year's first graders and their parents will attend a program presented by stu dents from the first and sec ond grades. The school nurse, a speech therapist and the school principal will talk briefly. Invitations have been sent to all known pre-first graders. Parents of children who will velt school and who have not velt school and who have re received invitations have been asked to telephone the school, 772-2300, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Construction Pay Tops in Oregon Salem - ll'PIl - In March, construction workers had the biggest average salary in Ore gon industry, according to the Oregon Employment Depart ment. Their average was $138 38 a week. Next highest pay went to primary metal workers -$114.27 a week. Then came machinists at $113.19 and printers at $112.27 a week. At the bottom of the list were canning and preserving workers, at $71.81 a week. The average weekly wage in Oregon in March was $100.32, the bulletin said. This was up nearly $3 a week from March, 1961.
