AMERICA ON THE GO Wheels to Fit Your 4 1 Wanderlust F Next time you travel, take along kitchen, bedroom, living room and prove that home is where the highway is By STANLEY H. BRAMS Originally, the automobile was a toy for a sportsman a hobby and a status symbol. Then it became a utility, something to get you from here to there. Now it has become a combination of the two a vehicle to take you some where in a fun way. The marriage of wheels and wanderlust reaches new heights of happiness this year. You can find economy-minded vehicles to tour in, or luxurious ones. Either class (or those in between) has var iants to fit small or large families. And every conceivable kind of accessory is available to fit your wanderlust, including air conditioning. More important, every vehicle in this great array can be outfitted complete in itself transportation, shelter, kitchen, supply base for fishing, hunting, swimming, or just lazing. Basic in the array of fun-filled vehicles for family movement is the station wagon. This year there are no fewer than 81 different models available in the Ameri can automobile family, not to speak of a number from abroad, mainly by foreign affiliates of U. S. producers. They range in price from $2,081 to $4,873, plus taxes and delivery. There are two-seat and three-seat versions, some folding down to provide a flat floor at the rear which you can equip with mattresses and other custom fittings. Some station-wagon manufacturers have created extra room by doing away with the spare tire; instead, they have used compartmented tires, which are all but immune to sudden puncturing. An added virtue in some 1962's is a locked compartment in the door to hide smaller objects instead of leaving them in plain sight. The station wagon, of course, has undergone a major transformation in the past few years, giving it a wider range of functions. The result is the part-wagon, part-bus, generally called the station van or sports wagon. Versatility is the keynote of these carryalls. They'll transport nine passengers with ease, and when they have been cleared in the rear they provide as much as 204 cubic feet of space to carry the bulkiest gear. Using these wonderful club buses as a basis, you can customize your wandering wheels 1. Ford Econoline van is fine for picnic or vacation trip. 2.
