Science Teaching in
High Schools Said
Making Advances
Corvallis Science teaching
in American high schools is
making dramatic advances
but it is also undergoing some
significant changes, according
to an Oregon State university
leader who recently was nam
ed president-elect of the 20,-000-member
National Science
Teachers association.
Most any parent can testify
that students are going faster

to Dr. Stanley E. Williamson,
head of the department of sci
ence education.
The laboratory, more than
ever before, is the "heart" of
the high school science pro
gram. And in the laboratory,
students do more-or should
than just repeat standard ex
periments that verify scion
tifice principles, Williamson
said. They do experiments in
which the answers are not
known, but have to be found
out.
Not An Experimen
If the student knows the
answer before he gets Into the
laboratory, it isn't much of
an experiment, Williams com
mented. A higher percentage of
high school students are elect
ing to take science courses
than in past years, he point
ed out, a fact that is perhaps
most encouraging of all to sci-!
ence educators.
The dread uf science is slow
ly being replaced with an
awareness of the importance
and excitmcnt of science and
a feeling that science Is for
everyone, Williamson be
lieves. Science courses are being
constantly upgraded, William
son pointed out. New course
materials have been develop
ed by selected college and
secondary teachers under
grants from the National Sci
ence Foundation.
Tested in High Schools
These are tested in high
schools in various areas and
the wrinkles Ironed out be
fore being made available to
all schools, Williamson ex
plained. The big problem is getting
enough well-trained teachers
to teach the classes, and get
ling adequate science teach
ing facilities in the schools.
The demand for good teach
ers far exceeds the supply,
Williamson reported.
Teachers must have excel
lent preparation to handle the
advanced new materials and to
challenge the science-conscious
students, he observed.
Night, summer and academic
year teacher institutes spon
sored by the Nntional Science
Foundation are helping out
greatly in this respect, Wil
liamson noted.
Under the institute pro
gram, the teachers get special
study grants to help defray
the costs of Ihe advanced
training.
The science teachers them
selves have shown great en
thusiasm and determination in

room, Williamson added.

$88,000 for Study

constructing the total environ
ment of ancient mammals in
southeastern Oregon and ad
Joining areas has attracted an
$88,000 National Science
Foundation grant (or Dr. J.
Arnold Shoiwell of the Uni
versity of Oregon.
Dr. Shotwell is assistant di
rector of the University's Mu
seum of Natural History and
associate professor of biology
and geology.
Included In the grant Is
$40,000 for the construction
of a new laboratory building,
which will be used for the
analysis of fossil pollens and
sediments. The one-story, 30-
by-73-fnnt structure is tenta
tively planned for the north
east corner of Ihe physical
plant area, across the millrace
from the main campus.
The remaining $48,000 of
the grant will be used for a
new intensive three-pronged
approach to Dr. Shutwcll's
long-range study in paleobiol
ogy - recreating the total pic
i lire of the world in which the

early mammals of thc North
ern Great Basin lived. The
