TUESDAY, MAY IS. 1962 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON Grange News Phoenix Grang The next Phoenix Home Economies club meeting will be at the home of Mrs. George Hartley, May 16, with a des sert luncheon served at 1 p.m. The last meeting at Phoenix Grange was presided over by Warren Loffer, who had the flag presented then turned the chair over to Melvin Lattie. The session concerned the tax burden on real property; especially agricultural inter ests which have the largest load. Purpose of the meeting was to discuss the problem and appoint a committee to study and prepare a program to pre sent to the next legislature. Lattie introduced the various speakers. Among speakers was State Senator Lynn Newbry, who said a law was passed at the last legislature to zone farm -land as agricultural property to prevent misrepresentation on appraisal values. He also said that less spending Is a necessity to hold taxes down. State Representative John Dcllenback expressed the same thought about the high cost with people demanding more considerations and at the same time complaining about high taxation. He pointed out that our schools are a primary tax obligation. The county court's view on the tax problem was present ed by Commissioner Chester Wcndt. There were several other speakers and representatives from the Farm Bureau, Po mona Grange and the Dairy men's association. Happy Camp Grang Happy Camp - Linda Had den was crowned May Queen by Paul Louquet, master of the Happy Camp Grange, at the annual May Queen dance recently, sponsored by the Grange. Miss Hadden topped three other contestants in selling tickets for votes. A gift to the queen film the Grange was a gold wrist watch, and the queen also keeps her gown and the crown. 4-H NEWS Lake Creek Rancheros The Lake Creek Rancheros 4-H Horse club meeting was called to order by Vice Presi dent Liz Flint recently at the home of leader, Larry Perry. One guest, Linda Gibson, of the West Side Hay Burners, and all club members with their horses attended. Dr. James Perry, Central Point, vaccinated the horses for dis temper. We discussed the dates of the coming pre-fairs, our lead er encouraged us to attend the Sis-Q pre-fair. A demonstration on horse manship was given by Tom Perry and Mark Flint, and showmanship by Gail Perry. Correct leads aids were in structed by the club leaders. The first step of the saddle horse advancement program was taken by Linda Armitage. Club members who particl' pated in the annual Matthews cattle drive were Donna Hoefft, Dale Johnston, Bob Bonner, Mary Ann Gardener, and Junior leader Lauramay Noble. Leaders Larry Perry, Mrs. Bob Fisher and Lauramay Noble participated in the leaders school on 4-H horse project clinic recently at the Jackson county fairgrounds Next club meeting will be May 19 at Lauramay's play field on Brophy rd. Club mem bers will leave Brownsboro at 9:30 a.m. with Tom Perry as guide. Mrs. Virginia Cecil, vo cal music director, managed a thrilling performance of the fifth and sixth grades. Emil Kroeger of the Ore gon State Elks was responsi ble for the variety show. He was introduced by Al Birman of recreation. Kroeger expressed his grat itude to the teachers of the Briscoe school, and introduced Mrs. Virginia Cecil to the men, and mentioned her out standing accomplishments and work with the children, as director of the chorus. Chaperonei Group Richard Leigh, principal, also came, to chaperone the group. Mrs. Raymond Bowles, the chorus mother, also was present. Besides the singing, there were piano soloists Annita Van Buskirk, Meredith Reyn olds, Jean Reynolds, Pcarline Will, Carlista Holland, and a flute solo by Karen Cecil. Accompanist was Miss Linda Bruno. Sixty-four little singers, Mrs. Cecil directing, gave the Oregon State Song. Included among their impressive offer ings were "Lilac Tree" and "Hi Ho Anybody Home." Canaday Impressed Montie Canaday who never misses a show sponsor ed by the Ashland Elks said he was impressed with the understanding of the children as to their parts and their readiness to participate and cooperate with the general program. He commented on a little fellow in the second row who was lost to the world outside of his singing. In the first row, a little girl with wide blue eyes, sing ing "The Lord Is My Shep herd," looked up at the direc tor in touching faith and trust. "This is the way that top entertainment is born," Montie said when the chorus had ended the number. Comments of Thanks The way the audience re ceived them brought com ments of thanks from the di rector. "I was glad she did that," Canaday said, "it made us all fee'0as if we had taken part." Other popular offerings by the fifth and sixth grades were "April Showers," "Bed Is Too Small," and "One Two Three." As a final number there was "Sing Sing Sing.' Wit'0 a deep impression made on the audience of vet- erans, the children scampered back into their bus, and rolled away, e Eva McLaughlin and Ann, Kroeger, serving refresh ments, remained for another hour after the show w a 3 closed.
