The sponsoring institution is the White City Realty com pany, with Al Fidura as the institutional representative to the Crater Lake Council. Richard Wooden, who was instrumental in getting the troop started, is chairman of the troop committee. James Bunker is the Scoutmaster, and Charles Coon the assist ant Scoutmaster. Other members of the troop committee include Elmer Blinker, George Palmer, James Smith, Dean Stockton, James Trimble and Rupert Wilson. The eight boys whose names appear on the original charter for the troop are Ricky Allen, Tommy Binker. Jerry Bunker. Steve Cook, John Dover, David, Stockton, Rickie Trimble and Victor Wooden. The troop meets each Tues day at 7 p.m. over the office of the White City Realty com pany. All boys over the age of 11 are welcome. But last week I had a dis turbing experience. His moth er asked me to take him shop ping for a suit. She told me to pretend I was getting him a Size 9, even though he takes a 6. This became awk ward because Ernie heard the salesgirl say, "Here's a 6!" I winked at her and mumbled something about it being marked wrong. We wound up with a 7, but Ernie thinks it's 9. I have hopes that our doctor will do some thing about it if Nature doesn't bring Ernie up to average in a year or so. Meanwhile, I see nothing wrong in using a few ruses to make him feel more like the other kids in his class. If he's 8 he should take Size 8 or 9. he thinks. Usually I shop without having him along and remove the labels. But once when he accompanied me and heard me ask for a 6, he be gan to cry. "I'm 8, not 6," he sobbed, as though I was get ting him baby clothes. 1 even transferred him from a play group, where he was the shortest, to one with younger boys where he's one of the tallest. The Council: That word "average" can be a cruel one and, humanly speaking, there's no such thing. No in dividual is really average. He's himself and, as such. someone special! So Mrs. H. would do better to prepare Ernie to grow to be himself, rather than to be average. And if that self is destined to be on the dwarfish ide, it can still be a happy, useful and most precious self. No subterfuges, and certainly no pologies, are necessary. While the subject of Ernie's stature needn't be harped on, neuner ought it be side stepped as awkwardly as Mrs. H. has been doing. Out shop ping, tell him we're buying this size because this is the size that fits. Never mind what it's called. If it's 6 and you're 8, so what? You're reading "Size 8" books, aren't you? You're keeping up with &ize-8 accomplishments, even Size-10, according to Uncle Eric. As to the play group. Mrs. H. may be right. In gymnas tics, physical matching makes the contests and formations more balanced. But once Ernie can be realistic about being short, he should have his choice - stay with the young kids for the sake of good races and bouts? Or more into his age group and find niches where his brain. as well as nimblencss, make up for his limited reach? We don't know the family graph of hereditary height patterns, so we can't predict wnetner Ernie will say short, or whether he may undergo a growth spurt during ado lescence. Whatever hope tile doctor held out to Mrs. H. was probably based upon his acquaintance with other mem bers of the family. This we know: The doctor can tell Mrs. H. when growth has ceased by observing the ossi- tication of the ends of the long bones. In some people, this is not complete until their 20th year. Meanwhile, short people continue to be "giants" among Us in vital fields. Mrs. H. might quote Victor Hugo to Ernie: "There is no such thing as a little country. The greatness of a people is no more determined by their number, than the greatness of a man is determined by his height."
