o MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON SUNDAY. MAY 13. 1962 P.O. Box 252 By NOFJWA CLARK Six Tracts of Timber Offered at District Auction A 3 It: X it: assail "Tlie story of Lollypop be gan with a frantic telephone call," writes Roger Fowler of Hollywood, Calif. "It was from a friend of mine, telling me that three baby canaries in his back yard aviary had fallen out of their nest. One was dead, but he thought I might be able to save the other two. I assured him that I would try, and a half an hour later he ar rived with the babies in a paper bag. "This was not my first experience with young ca naries; I raised one by hand from an egg just two years before. So I went to work mixing together Pab lum. egg yolk, poppy seed, sugar and cracker crumbs. "Before long I discovered that one was very sick, and he died two hours later. How ever, the remaining one thrived under my care and feeding, and I named him Lollypop. "Before two weeks went by my lillle foster child had grown from two inches to nearly three and was already trying to fly. In another four weeks, little Lollypop was not only flying, but singing, feed ing himself and had learned to do his first trick, which was to light a miniature flash light by pressing his foot on a small plunger. It was then that I discovered he was a 'south paw'. ''I had heard that canar ies cannot be taught lo do tricks, and that made me Interested to see how many I could teach him to do. Before the first year and a half had passed, he had a repertoire of 11 tricks, had appeared on the Danny Thomas television show and had been given a half-page write-up in the Hollywood Citizen News. "He docs tricks on com mand as well as any movie canine. He picks up a dime and drops it in a piggy bank: he opens a small box and takes out a miniature card and then flics to my shoul der with it. He pulls a card from a deck, and then after the deck is shuffled, he pulls the same card out for a sec ond time. "Although Lollypop only weighs three - fourths of an ounce, he can lift a quarter of an ounce plunger and drop spread is eight and three quarters of an inch. "In an automboile Lolly pop rides on my shoulder and sings his little heart out right under my ear. Lollypop is indeed a very remarkable canary. He will be three years old on July 4." LIGHTS OF PERTH Since the night the citi zens of Perth, Western Au stralia, turned on their lights to welcome John Glenn dur ing his orbital flight, letters have poured into that city from Americans to express their thanks. Matthew Utting, a consult ing engineer of Perth, writes: "Thank your fellow coun trymen and women for their sincere and courte ous letters, which have been posted up in the Town Hall- for all to read. "The light were turned on in all homes during the night, and all street lights were kept on. Our own house lights did not contribute very much, but I have pleasure in reporting that the 125 Medium Anti Aircraft battery, which is close to us, had two search lights probing the sky as John Glenn passed over. It was a most inspiring , night and something that history will record."
