Miller, 755 Ellen dale dr. Smoke reportedly awakened the family and the davenport was removed to the garage before firemen were called. Firemen said that a dropped cigarette was the ap parent cause. Quinn residence, 213 South Barneburg rd. Firemen discon nected the heater. Dinner Planned-The Med ford Eagles and auxiliary nave scheduled a Mother's Day din ner honoring Gold Star Moth ers at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Eagles hall, 217 West Main St., Medford. Auxil iary have been asked to take a covered dish. The dinner is open to members and Gold Star mothers. Crater Instructor Back from Meeting Central Point - Mrs. Shir ley Drysdale, chairman of the Crater high school mathemat ics department, returned re cently from the 40th annual meeting of the National Coun cil of Teachers of Mathemat ics in San Francisco. She was one of 2.330 teach ers from throughout the United States attending and one of 27 Oregon teachers. The activities were designed to improve teaching of math ematics by increasing knowl edge of teaching methods available. Mrs. Drysdale attended six hours of lectures on "Struc tures of Algebra," plus lec tures on use of ..udio-visual aids in mathematics and the efficient training of mathe matics teachers. Leading college and high school mathematics teachers from throughout the nation took part in the conference. Sunday Four people were injured in one of three accidents Sun day on Jackson county high ways, according to state po lice. Taken to the Rogue Valley hospital with cuts and bruises were James Marion Babb, 83, of 2150 Pacific highway. Tal ent, driver of one car; Eugene Netl Moore, 38, of route 1, box 226, Rogue River, driver of another car; his passengers, Julia Ann Moore, 34. and Cyn thia Ann Moore, 10, also of Rogue River. Babb was reported in good condition at Rogue Valley hos pital this morning. The others were treated and released. Babb was crossing the South Pacific highway to go east on Valley View rd. near Talent and pulled onto the highway in front of the Moore car, state police said. Considerable damage resulted to both cars. Another accident Sunday occurred in the Applegate area. A pickup truck driven by Elinor Maurine Johanson, 35, of route 1, box 59K, Jackson ville, travelling south on Hamilton rd., missed a curve, crossed a ditch and knocked down 20 feet of fencing. A pedestrian, Charles Dar win Gray, 65, of Camp White Domiciliary, was injured in another accident reported. He was struck by a car driven by Byron Wade Lam bert, 25, of 1206 East 11th St., Medford, which was headed north on the Crater Lake highway near Four Corners. Gray complained of pains in his left leg and hip. He was taken by Camp White ambu lance to the domiciliary in firmary, police said. OBITUARIES JOHN V. SCHOW John Valentine Schow, 83, of 369 West Second St., Cen tral Point, died Saturday in a local rest home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Memorial chapel on the North Phoenix rd. The Rev. D. E. Millard of the New Age church, Eagle Point, will officiate. Committal will be in Siskiyou Memorial parte, with Conger-Morris Funeral directors in charge of arrange ments. Mr. Schow was born Feb. 14, 1879, in Clear Lake, Iowa, and had lived in southern Oregon for the past 33 years. He was married Nov. 24, 1908, at Flandreau, S. D to Nellie Mae Hermon, who died in 1953. Survivors include t w o daughters, Mrs. Warren Kel soe, Medford; and Mrs. Alva Laws, Roseburg, Ore.; three brothers, William Schow, Garner, Iowa; Fred Schow, Clear Lake, Iowa; and Myron Schow, Clear Lake, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Dora La dendorf, and Mrs. Alice Seig er, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; and Mrs. Julia Pie, Vancouver, B.C.; four grandsons, and seven great grandchildren. Casket bearers will include Sylvester Stevens, Darrell Bayne, and four grandsons, Robert Laws, David Kelsoe, Roger Kelsoe, and Wayne Kelsoe. Medford, died yesterday in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hillcrest Memorial chapel on the North Phoenix rd., with Conger-Morris Funeral direc tors in charge of arrange- Faculty Center Remodeling Slated Eugene - (UPn - The State Board of Higher Education in June will be asked to approve remodeling of the Faculty Center at the corner of 13th and University sis. on the University of Oregon campus. The 75-year-old Victorian house has served as head quarters of the Faculty Club since the early 1940s. Plans call for remodeling of the interior, including a new kitchen. Only change in the exterior will be extension of the west wing, which now houses a recreation room. MATILDA A. WHITMAN Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda A. Whitman, 77, of Yoncalla, who died Wednes day, will be' held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Yoncalla, with in terment at 2:30 p.m. the same day in Hillcrest Memorial park on the North Phoenix rd. Conger-Morris funeral di rectors are in charge of ar rangements. Mrs. Whitman was born Jan. 7, 1885, in Indiana. Survivors include a son, Er- mil R. Whitman, in the U. S. Army at Ft, Riley, Kans.; two daughters, Mrs. Harold C. Summer Activities Subject of Meeting Plans for summer activities for Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs will be discussed at roundtable meetings start ing at 7:30 o'clock tonight in Hedrick Junior High school. Donald Carlon will lead the Cub Scout leaders in present ing their summer programs, and David Harbison and his committee will present a pro gram relative to their theme, "Gimmicks and Gadgets.'' This will be the last round- table meeting for the leaders until August. A combined meeting of all adult groups associated in Scouting is set for June when a picnic will be held at Tou- Velle State park. Husbands and wives of the leaders are invited. LAWRENCE D. He was a past master and charier member of Cascade Lodge, Shady Cove, member of Hlllah Tem ple of the Shrine and Royal Arch Masons. He is survived by his wife, Mary Francis Massey. Friends may make a con tribution to the Shriners Crippled Children hospital in Portland.
