Tornado At GP On Medford's Black Tornado goes t9 Grants Pass high on Tuesday afternoon for a Southern Oregon conference varsity make up baseball game. Tornado Coach John Ko- Drag Strip Will Open On May 13 The Medford drag strip at White City is scheduled to open Sunday, May 13, for the 1962 season. Drag races, sanctioned and sponsored by Southern Ore gon Timing associa ion, will be held on seven week ends during the summer months. Rain date for the May 13 meet is May 27th. Race dates after May 13 in clude June 9-10 (Spring cham pionship) July 7-8 (Worlds Fair meet), July 28-29 (Na tionals sponsorship), August 12, Sept. 1-2-3 (Sixth Annual Northwest Gas & Fuel cham pionship), and Sept. 23 (An nual Charity meet). Some 150 entrants are ex pected to be on hand for the May 13 opener, vying for a reported $100 in cash prizes and a host of trophies and special awards. Racers are ex pected from throughout Ore gon & Northern California gunning their powerful accel eration machines to speeds of near 160 miles per hour on the one-fourth mile track. Many hot rodders of the area have been busy building new cars during the winter months and are eager to try them out for the first time thi season. All entrants must go through a stiff safety in3pec tion before being allowed to compete. In the main Nation al Hot Rod association rules will be used to govern the safety of the cars. Gates open rit 8:30 a.m. with times runs being made in the mornir - ' elimina tion heats set for 1 p.m. The drag strip is located seven miles north of Med ford off the Crater Lake high way. Crater JV Outscores Ashlanders Central Point - Pilfered bases in the first game and a grandslam homer in the sec ond were features here Satur day as the Crater high junior varsity tripped the Ashland jayvees 5 to 1 and 6 to 4 in baseball. Harold Allen, Dave Twedell and Don Patterson stole home for the Comets in the first game and John McNichols squeezed in Roger Neufcld in a contest which saw the Comets do a lot of bunting. Twedell for the Comets and Don Baker of Ashland each doubled. Larry Mason hurled four hit ball for Crater, walking four and whiffing five. John Rhodes fanned two, walked one and hit one in a three hitter for Ashland. Dan Cesaro topped a six run surge by Crater in the second game with a grand slammer. The ball was hit into the new high school ad dition back of left field. Harold Allen had two hits for Crater. OSU Scores 6th Verdict In Division United Pres. International Hard-hitting Oregon State is pulling away in the North ern division baseball race. The Beavers won their sixth game in seven ND starts by walloping Washington 13-3 at Corvallis. The victory gave Oregon State a 21-1 record for the season. Doug Stahl and Brian Bail ey sparked the Beavers' 13 hit attack with three hits apiece. Stahl drove in three runs. Al Lehrer added a pair of doubles for the winners. Jim Falk, a junior left-hander, limited the Huskies to five hits to register the win. Mel Erickson was the losing pitch er. Oregon was scheduled to play Washington today at Eugene. Viks Take Doublebill United Press International Lewis and Clark moved into a first place tie with Linfield in the Northwest con ference baseball race by de feating Willamette 4-2 and 6-1 in a doubleheader at Salem Saturday. Linfield split a twin bill with Pacific at Forest Grove. Pacific won the first game 3-2 and Linfield took the second contest 12-2. LC and Linfield lead the way with 8-1 records. In the Oregon Collegiate conference, front running Portland State swept a dou bleheader from Oregon Tech at Klamath Falls 8-4 and 15-0 for its fifth and sixth wins in as many starts. The home club Pelicans won the first fracas 4 to 0 and the Medfords rallied to cop the second hassle 5 to 4. KF chucker Jim Coon held Medford to two hits, by Jim Allen and Larry Godley in the first conflict, while strik ing out six batters and walk ing six. Rick Horn homered for the Pelicans and Denny and Cun ningham each doubled. Three-hit relief pitching by Allen served Medford in good stead in the second fracas. Medford lagged 2 to 0 after the first inning then picked up one run in the second frame and four in the fifth. Larry Godley highlighted the big splurge with a three-base knock. Ron Edmonds and Ken Phipps singled and were two walks in the inning. Bob Duden Heads Field Tualatin -IUPI)- The 72-hole Oregon Open golf tournament got under way here today with a field which included seven former champions. Bob Duden of Portland, a three-time winner, headed the field. Bill Eggers of Portland, the defending champion, was not included. Eighteen holes were sched uled today. Another 18-hole round is set for Tuesday and 36 holes are scheduled for Wednesday. Don Krieger shot a 146 to win the Oregon Golf associa tion's Champion of cham pion's tournament Sunday al Cornelius. OREGON Cyeloi.es Subdue Salem's Pin Team Medford Cyclones bounced the Sam Valley Victors 11 to 9 at Salem on Sunday to take over the frontrunner spot again in the Oregon Pro-fc-ional fowling league. The Cyclones took a 6 to 2 jump in the team event half of the contest then sur vived a bonus bid by the Victors in the singles as Sa lem's Frank Evans and Ray Kronser rolled respective games of 234 and 221. Victory gave the Medford team a 6-2 record In the stand ings and dropped Salem to second with 6-3. Bob Dempsey, Charles Mc- GP Downs Ashland in Track Tilt Ashland-A 6-foot 334-inch high jump by Bob Shepard and a 12-11 pole vault by Gary Van Koten were track meet highlights here Saturday when the powerful Grants Pass Cavemen won from Ash land 952 to 26. Unless marks were improv ed on elsewhere in the state over the week end the two efforts rank as second best in the state this season. Cavemen took 13 of the 14 firsts in the meet yielding only the 220-yard dash, which was won by Ashland's Gary Wal lace. Three St. Mary's trackmen took places in the meet but their efforts were not includ ed in the scoring. Paul Elliott of the Crusaders was second in the high hurdles and third in the lows, Allen Wruck was third in the half-mile and Jim Calhoun second in the javelin. Medford's sin gles wins were McKenzie 175 to 167 over Don Lebold, Dempsey 217 to 156 over Tony Vittone and McWhorter 214 to 182 over Bill Amen. In the team e ent Dempsey downed Vittone 219 to 197, McWhorter beat Lyle Ander son 217 to 181 and Fred An derson won from Evans 211 to 180. The Cyclone manufactured a margin of 1,969 to 1,917 in total pins on strenpi - of a 1,034 to 957 gap in the team event. Salem out-scored Med ford 960 to 935 in singles.
