SUB-REGIONAL MEETING The Jackson county chapter of the American Red Cross was host for the sub-regional home service meeting last week. Among those who attended were Ed Siemens, American Red Cross Field director from the Portland Air Force base, and Dr. Elmo N. Stevenson, chairman of the Jackson county chapter of the American Red Cross. Serviceman's Life Explained at Red Cross Meeting Here Ed Siemens, Red Cross field director from the Portland Air Force base, explained the life of a serviceman overseas, and the duties of a field director overseas when he spoke be fore the sub-regional home service meeting here last week. The latter is the go-between for the military and the serv icemen's family, and in the same way the chapters act in the United States, Siemens said. Using colored slides he showed where servicemen live, where battle maneuvers are held and where they go for entertainment. Troops scattered over a vast terrain doing their best to hide from the "enemy," elude the field director trying to deliver an emergency message from home. Often as many as 7,000 troops and their dependents are under one field director and an assistant. Home serv ice workers are urged to re member this when answers to emergency messages seem to be delayed, he said. A tour of the Veterans domiciliary was conducted, and Henry Herzog, domicili ary director, told of the plans of the domiciliary. Fifty-three volunteers at tended the meeting and lunch from southern Oregon. Abe and Bob were next door neighbors. The courts in the United States are in disagreement as to the rights of persons suffering from the existence of a "spite fence." Many courts hold that a person who owns land can use it in any way he desires without having his motives questioned. Edsar Hoover has warned American business men they are prime targets for Soviet spies seeking to steal industrial secrets. Hoover said in a copyright ed article in Nation's Business magazine that spies attend business conventions, lunch eons and social affairs in hopes of picking up classified technical information. After they have made con tact with businessmen, Hoov er said, the espionage agents may place an order and then follow it up with a request for classified maps or booklets the businessmen can obtain. Fourth District Congress man Edwin R. Durno met Sat-1 urday night with a group of! his constituents at the Med ford hotel. He discussed the congressional situation and emphasized his belief in the necessity of restraining the trend to excessive spending and encroaching executive power on congressional areas of authority. Durno told the group that, in campaigning for the Re publican nomination for U. S. Senator, he would concentrate his efforts on other districts of Oregon since his record is already known in the fourth district. Interim Committee To Meet in City The Legislative interim committee on natural re sources will meet at 9 a.m. May 7 in the Jackson county extension office auditorium to discuss forest and stream problems of the Rogue River valley. On the agenda are federal range allotment changes, wa ter pollution, stream muddy ing by logging and mining, and water programs for the Rogue River basin, according to Sen. L. W. Newbry, (R Talent!, committee member. Rep. Richard Eymann, (D Mohawk), will preside at the session of the subcommittee on power, water, forestry, minerals, gas and oil. Other members besides Newbry are Reps. Robert F. Smith, (R-Durns), Carl Black, (D-Port Orford), and Sen. An drew Naterlin. (D-Newport). Interim Committee Chairman Clinton Kaight, (D-Baker). also is scheduled to attend as an ex-officio member of the subcommittee. Recommendations and sug gestions will be considered by the interim committee in its report to the 1963 legislature.
