Tork Sets New
Pole Vault Record
Walnut, Calif. - (UP1) -Marine
Lieutenant Dave Tork
Saturday exceeded the out
door world record for pole
vault and became the second
man in history to clear 16
feet when he soared over 16
feet 2 inches at the fourth
annual Mt. San Antonio Re
lays. The 27-year-old Tork, who
hadn't even cleared 15 until
last year, cleanly vaulted
over the bar on his second
attempt at the magic height.
It was the highest vault
ever recorded - indoors or
out - and only the fourth
over the once "impossible"
figure of 16 feet. Another Ma
rine, John Uelses, became the
first person in history to pass
the barrier when he did it
last Feb. 2 at an indoor meet
in New York.
' Tork's vault came late in
the day after the other events
had long finished and was
witnessed by only about a
hundred spectators. It over
shadowed the first sub-four
minute mile in history by for
mer University of Oregon
star Jim Grelle who ran
3:59.9.
Grelle's clocking was only
the fourth mile under four
minutes run by an American
citizen.

but Liston wasn't when in
formed of his turn-down by
the New York commission.
'It doesn't bother me at
all," said the outspoken
heavyweight challenger, who
has been arrested 19 times
and jailed twice. "I will con
tinue to train as if nothing
hrppened.
'A lot of friend:, sent tele
grams to say how sorry they
were, but it s Patterson they
should feel sorry for, because
now I II probably get to fight
him in Philadelphia, and
that's my home ground."
Calltd Poor ExampU
Not everyone felt sorry for
Liston, however.
Don Brennan, executive
secretary of the Virginia ath
letic commission, said the con
troversial challenger provides
a poor example for America's
youngsters.
"If he should become
heavyweight champion,'1
Brennan declared, "profes
sional boxing would be in a
very bad state of affairs since
the youth of America - of the
entire world - look up to the
world's heavyweight champi
on." When Liston and Patterson
signed contracts on March 16,
the site for the fight wvs left
unsettled although it was
pretty much understood it
would be held either a'. Yan
kee Stadium, Sept. 17, or at
the Polo Grounds, Sept. 26.
Friday's rejection, howev
er, meant that the fight must
be held in some state where
Liston can be licensed.
