Newspaper Page TextSix Accidents Checked by Police 1 Six non-injury vehicle acci dents in Medford were report ed during a three-day period, according to city police. Two citations were issued, police said. , In the first of three acci dents Friday, a car registered to Eugene Peart Bennett, 329 South Grape St., was damaged about' 8:58 a.m. by a vehicle driven by Rctha Irene Bro phy, 36, of 264 South Modoc ave., while- it was parked in front of his residence. Alice Vivian Hash, 51, of 319 Newtown St., was cited for failure to yield the right 'Of way after the vehicle which she was operating collided about 4.30 p.m. with a car driven by Carol Ann McBeth, 15, Jacksonville, at Laurel and Tenth sts. Marjorie Joye Hearrell, 1237 North Riverside ave., reported to police that a six foot section of hedge at Pul ver motel was ripped from the ground by an unknown vehicle sometime between Thursday and Saturday. City police assisted in the investigation of a two-car col lision about 10:25 p.m. Sat urday at Ehrman rd. and North Pacific hwy. Drivers involved were Lavone Mavis Hemmerling, 36, of 4069 South Pacific highway., and Henry William Lindvall, 40, of 245 Wilson rd. Lindvall was cited for following t o o close. Vehicles operated by Charlotte Ruth Dowell, 38, Eagle Point, and John How ard Redmond, 66, Chino, Cal if., collided about 4:20 p.m. Sunday on Highway 99 be tween Gore and Ash aves. A car operated by Terryl Ann Antony, 18, of 401 South Modoc ave., struck and dam aged a maple tree at 55 Quince st. about 9:15 p.m. Annual harvest of peanuts in the U. And tha latest surveys indicate consumers today ara "willing" as wall as able to "purchase durable goods at a high rata in tha months to coma." Government, a second massive spender in the United States, also is coming through for the economy's growth. Federal Government spending is not rising at as rapid a rate as at this time in 1961 when the recovery was Just Retting under way and thus it is not providing as sharp a stimulus but government spending is still increasing and it will continue to increase. Whatever may be your atti tude toward big-bigger-biggest spending by Washington, the reality is this is the trend and it's not going to be reversed under the Kennedy administration. State and local govern ment spending is climbing to all-time peaks month after month as well and this trend isn't going lo be reversed either. Only business, the third key spender in the United States, is not coming through on a sufficient scale so far to add major power to our economy's advance. Business spending for new plants and equipment this year is estimated at $37.2 billion, up 8 per cent from 1961's level to a new racord-but good as that seems, it's not good enough. Tha total is only a bit over tha previous eeord established back in 1957, when we were a much mailer economy. This type of spending is crucial and it's up to govern ment to give industry the incentives as soon as possible to accelerate it. Many more billions must be invested in modernization of U.S. factories and equipment if we're to be able to turn out quality goods at prices which can meet competition from foreign producers at home and abroad. Far more than is being done must be done in this sphere if our economy is to grow at a pace which will provide the jobs needed for our workers. , The crushing of steel's attempt to raise prices to get the extra money to invest in new plants has now focused world attention on this challenge to us. The bill giving Industries a tax rebate if they invest in new plants should be pushed through Congress. The time-table of the Treas ury's profoundly important new depreciation schedules which will permit corporations investing in new factories to write off the expenses more rapidly and have huge amounts thereby should be speeded up. America's consumers are coming through for solid and custained prosperity. Government at all levels is coming through. With a push which is entirely justified and in fact imperative, I'm confident business will come through too as this year rolls on. There's a long story behind that sign. The story goes back to protests by Sen. Morse (D-Ore.) about liquor being served in the U.S. Capitol. A Washington newspaper, the Daily News, took note of Morse's protest, and printed it together with a picture the news paper said showed Morse in a local bar posing with his hand on the beer tap. Morse replied that the picture, taken some years ago, actually was taken in a soda fountain. The paper again printed Morse's denial, together with a further re port that the establishment was a cocktail bar. The senator then said that at lease when he went into the place, he thought it was a soda fountain. All of which impelled barman Matt Kane to put up the sign, which he hopes will clear up any question about what kind of refreshment he serves. An aide to Morse, who is a teetotaller, said the senator had his picture taken in Kane's bar and restaurant in 1960 when he was campaigning in the District of Colum bia presidential primary. He said Morse went in to get some breakfast and told Kane that he used to work as a soda jerk when he was a youth. The aide said Kane then asked Morse to pose behind his bar. Kane sent Morse a wire about two weeks ago saying he was "sorry for any embar rassment" the publicity might have caused the senator. The wire added: "I honestly believed you thought you were in a soda bar. Thank you for getting my little bar on the editorial pages." Three Workshops Set at University Eugene - Three summer workshops in business educa tion will be offered at the University of Oregon. The first, "Development of Business Education Program for the Academically Talent ed'' will be held June 18 to 29. Dr. E. C. McGill, assist ant to the president and di rector of academic affairs at Southern Oregon college, Ash land, will direct the work shop. The program will consist of an analysis of methods and techniques of instruction which are effective in teach ing business education courses for the academically talented students. Dr. John C. Gilliam will direct a workshop on "Basic Business and Economic Edu cation," which will be hold from July 23 to Aug. 3. Gil liam is an assistant professor of secretarial science at the University of Wyoming. A workshop in secretarial training is scheduled for July 30 througn Aug. 10. Dr. Mar ion M. Lamb, professor of business at Sacramento State college, will direct the work shop. Throe hours of credit may be earned for each workshop. For further information, write Dr. Jessie M.
