THURSDAY, APH1L College Research Benefits Are Told In Publication Corvallis - Benefit! to Ore gonians from Oregon State university research that "touchei nearly every person and industry of the state" are told in a special new OSU publication. "Oregon State not only teaches; it learns . . ." Is the theme. Title is "OSU Learns through Research." Designed to acquaint peo ple of the state with the dra matic findings coming from OSU research, the publication summarizes 21 of the more than 500 basic and applied re search projects underway in science, engineering, agricul ture, forestry, pharmacy and home economics. Included are stories of how radiation - resistant bacteria discovered by OSU scientists may some day protect man against radiation damage; how eastern Oregon ranges are being "rescued" from sagebrush; how oceanograph era are probing the ocean depths off Oregon for the first time; and how midget hens have been developed that lay as many eggs with 35 per cent less feed. Projects Listed Other articles tell of work to Improve the life of Warm Springs Indians; new uses for medicinal plants and new facts on the human cell; use of radar and satellites to gain new Insight into Northwest weather; problems faced in keeping Oregon s air clean and Its streams clear and livable for fish; and progress of forest scientists in breed ing superior trees. Fast Time for Colleges Approved Portland - aim - The state board of higher education has voted lo authorize Uni versity of Oregon, Oregon State University and Oregon College of Education In go on Informal daylight tlma start. APRIL 28, 1962 C 5 Super Markets See Changes in Trade Patterns New York -lUPli- Represenl atives of an Industry who helped make the shopper's cart a part of the American scene put on a hefty conclave next month to review the past, present and future of a $37 billion enterprise. The four-day convention at Chicago of the Super Market Institute Is expected to draw about 14.000 representatives of all segments of the food industry. The SMI calls It the 25th birthday meeting of the non-profit organization. It has 800 member companies with 16,000 retail food outlets. Patterns Changing While their growth of the past is known, members of the institute know that there are problems ahead; even at pres ent, the patterns of trade are changing. Super markets, which themsclvps started o t primarily as 1 stores, have added shelves of general mer chandise; discount stores have entered some parts of the gro cery and soft goods lines. While not confined to subur ban areas around major cities, supermarkets got much ot their early impetus in such areas; now, some economists see a drift back lo the city areas by parvs of the popula tion in the late 60s and 70s. In a lengthy review of the history of the supermarket, the SMI traces how the Idea of the mass, self-service empo rium had grown through the years; how the supermarket as shoppers now know It began to assume Its present form in the 1930s. Traced to Taxis The shopping cart Idea the SMI traces back to Texas, where, as could be expected, the Idea of something big and fast-moving caught on early. J. Wcingnrtcn opened a large market operation, re sembling a- super market, around 1918. competitor, Henke and Pillot, Inc., ac cording to the SMI story, had set up a basket carrier that i ran on n track against the walls of the store, to help the shopper gel out with the more- than-armload lots. Weingarten decided he could belter the idea, and an associate named Ellis D. Turn- ham, used a toy express wag on as a starting point. He took the handle off; fixed the front wheels in a stationary posi tion; arranged the body so a basket would fit Into It. The customer pulled the convey ance by using the handle of the basket. Conference Planned At State University Corvallis - A one-day Ore gon Industrial Development conference has been scheduled for May 18 at Oregon State university. Cooperating agencies with the school of business and technology are the state de partment of planning and de velopment, Oregon Chamber executives, Portland and Cor. vallis Chambers of Commerce, and associated Oregon indus tries. The conference Is expected to draw persons from across the state who are interested In Industrial development, Dr. ' Clifford E. Maser, dean of business and technology, said. Lester B. Strlckler and Per Sjogren of the business school staff are in charge of arrange- ments. Advanced registration for the conference Is requested. The $10 registration fee will Include lunch and dinner. 32c Tour Delegates To Attend Briefing Oregon's Future Farmer People to People delegates will have their first official briefing Saturday, April 28, In Salem. Of the delegates who plan to tour Europe this summer two are from Jackson county. They are'Larry Hlchey, Phoe nix and John Patrick, Eagle Point. Donald N. McDowell, direc tor of agriculture In Wiscon sin, and Les Davis, Winne bago, 111., People to People co ordinator, will attend the briefing. The delegate will leave Portland July 13 on a 22-day goodwill mission to England, Scotland, France, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. It will allow Oregon's Farm Youth an opportunity to in spect agricultural operations, working conditions, ind meth ods in both Eastern and West ern European farms. The Salem meeting will start at 1:30 p.m., according to Nat Etzel, Eagle Point, voca tional agriculture instructor, who will head the Oregon delegation,
