Dr. Vincenzo Bilotta, member of the staff of the exclusive Salvator M u n d Hospital here, said he treated Miss Taylor for a slight in jury to her nose. He said the actress was injured in an auto accident when she was re turning to Rome from the sea side resort of Porto Santo Stefano Monday. It was learned Wednesday that the 30-year-old actress had been treated at the hos pital. This touched off report in the Italian press that Miss Taylor had tried to commit suicide with an overdose of sleeping pills following an argument with Welsh actor Richard Burton, her near- constant companion since breaking up with her fourth husband, singer Eddie risner, The reports became so per sistent that Italian police questioned the staff at Miss Taylor's villa. But Wednesday night, Dr. Bilotta said the suicide re ports were "all lies" and that the actress had suffered ' small, small injury - very small, invisible almost," to her nose when her chauffeur- driven limousine screeched to a halt suddenly on the high way. . "A normal person . . wouldn't even have worried about the injury, the doctor said. Miss Taylor spent 20 hours In the hospital because she wanted to, not because the Injury demanded it, Dr. Bi lotta said. In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS From Cape Canaveral: A mooncraft (our Ranger 4) with an injured brain tum bles through space toward an almost useless collision with the moon after scientists aban doned futile efforts to awak- en it from its coma. At it looks now, Ranger 4, its mechanical brain addled by some mishap unknown, will zip past the leading edge of the moon early Thursday and will crash about 8:55 a.m. on the moon's hidden backside. The deeply disappointed director of the National Aero nautics and Space Adminis tration, William H. Picker ing, says Tuefully this morn ing: "It's kind of fun, though, to hit the back side. It's not everyone who can do that." But something slipped. The rockets that were to slow it down so it could land on the moon without too much of a jolt, went haywire. It appears to be just whirling around and around. The rockets first push it forward, and then they push it back. Is anyone old enoimh to remember back to Percy the Iron Man - a comic page character of a couple or three generations ago? He was de scribed thus: "Percy the Iron Man - Brains He lias Nix!" That seems to be the trouble with Ranger 4. rNE sometimes wonders It in these troubled days (especially troubled around taxpaying time) we couldn't do something more useful with the taxpayers' money than shooting at the moon. At the very least If we MUST shoot at the moon If that is more important al this moment in history than anything else We might cut out some of our other extravagances. We're pretty deeply in debt. We owe three hundred billion dollars. The interest on our national debt comes to more Ihan it costs to run our entire federal government only a few days decades ago. A little plain, ordinary economy would do us no harm. There are many, MANY places where we could economize. UT One supposes The Spanish people prob ably felt the same way about Columbus. They, too. were pretty heavily taxed And they probably felt that if given the choice they'd rath er have their tax burden re duced than to find out wheth er or not the world really is round, as a lot of the scien tists of that day were contending.
