First Fed eral Savings and Loan Association of Medford has just moved into a handsome new building at Sixth and Grape streets. So that the people of southern Oregon and northern California may see this newest financial institution in this section of Oregon, an "open house" is planned for Saturday, MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. Room for Expansion The handsome new struc ture, with 5,353 square feet on two floors plus 954 square feet of covered parking, pro vides for First Federal's im mediate needs along with a rental area occupied by Ren Taylor Insurance. The build ing is designed to accommo date five times its present ca pacity without major struc tural, mechanical or electri cal modifications as required. A partial basement with di rect access to exterior pro vides for archives storage and utility requirements. First Federal's new build ing was designed by Robert j Keeney, with architectural offices in the Medical Center building in Medford, and was constructed by Myers D. Jones, well known general contractor here. The associa tion's board requested Mr. Keeney to utilize local mate rials to the fullest, consistent with requirements of the building code. This was ac complished through the use of local lumber on paneled walls, locally manufactured doors and frames, counters and ceiling of general onice and lobby. Latest Features Adopted Exterior and interior stone from local quarries was ef fectively used. Architectural metals were designed by Keeney's office with dies made and extrusions fabri cated specifically for this project. Glass on exterior areas is "Solex" tinted for added comfort and light con trol. To overcome the objec tionable features of large areas of glass on the west por tion of the First Federal build ing, a special solar screen was installed across the en tire west wall on the second floor. Complete air conditioning, with a system equipped with electronic filters for maxi mum cleanliness of air, will add to the comfort of both customers and staff. Parking Is Provided rnvxi-nri narking for three cars, with direct access to the offices, has been provided for customer convenience in in lemcnt weather. Added park ing is available in the adja cent, enclosed area. All side walks were replaced and fin ished with non-slip metalic topping. Use of local materials was accomplished on the ceiling of the main lobby and gen eral office by combining a fibre glass acoustical cushion under the hemlock paneling. By spacing the panels a half inch, a sound resonator was created fully as effective as acoustical tile. Planting adds to the at tractiveness of the building. First Federal Savings and Loan Association's "open hmisp" and Diiblic inspection of the institution's attractive new building will extend from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday. Keeney, designer of First Federal Savings and Loan Association's attractive new home, received his li cense as a registered architect in 1936 and became associated with Frank C. Clark, one of Medford's best known archi tects. His formal education was acquired at the Univer sity of Oregon's School of Architecture and Allied Arts from 1925 to 1930. After four years service with the U. S. Army Engi neers during World War II, Mr. Keeney returned to Med MrH nnH established his ar chitectural firm, now located in the Medical Center build ing here. Robert Keenev has been an active member of the Ameri can Institute of Architects for the past 16 years. He is a member of the Episcopal church of Medford, the Rogue Valley Country club, the Elks lodge and Medford Kiwanis club. Included in Mr. Keeney's public service activities is the past chairmanship of the Jackson County Parks and Recreation commission. He is a member of the board of gov ernors, Friends of the Mu seum, University of Oregon. Recently Keeney's firm, which specialized in schools, public and commercial build ings, was selected as an asso ciate architect for the pro jected Medford federal build ing and post ottice. Herb Grey, advertising manager of the Medford Mail Tribune and director of the Medford Printing Company, publishers of that newspaper and operators of CBS radio station KYJC, has been First Federal's president since 1958. He is a director of the Oregon State Motor Associa tion, member of the Advisory Committee of the Travel Di vision, Oregon State Highway Department, and a director of the Southern Oregon Histori cal Society. A Mason, Shriner and Ro tarian, Mr. Grey is an honor ary life member of Salaam Shrine Temple, Newark, N. J.; a member of Alpha Delta Sigma, a trustee of Southern Oregon College Foundation and a member of the Antarcti can Society of Washington, D. C. Herb Grey is a past presi dent of the Oregon News paper publishers association, past president of the Jackson County Chamber of Com merce, former president of the Jackson County Lincoln Club and past president of Rogue River Valley Knife and Fork club. He is a member of the Med ford chamber of commerce, the Jackson County Shrine club, and Rogue Valley Coun try club. John Niedcrmeyer, a life long resident of Jackson County, owns and operates a farm near Jacksonville and is widely known throughout the county. He is a member of the Jackson County Agricul tural Council, this County's representative of the Oregon Seed Growers League, and an active member of the Grange. Mr. Niedermeyer is an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, is married and has two children. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon School of Business ad ministration, and has devoted much time to civic and politi cal activities in Medford and the Rogue River Valley. In addition to his affilia tion with the Masonic lodge, Shrine and Elks Mr. Nieder meyer is active in the Med ford chamber of commerce and the Medford Rotary club. He is now a member of the rural-urban and Four-H club committee of the Medford Ro tary club. John Niedermeyer is a member of the board of di rectors of Medford s new Rogue Valley Memorial hos pital, one of the finest in the northwest. Robert Kyle Executive Vice President, Director-Manager Since assuming the post four years ago as executive vice-president and manager of First Federal, Robert Kyle has achieved wide recogni tion in saving and loan cir cles. He is now a director of the Oregon Savings and Loan League, member of the ad vertising and public relations committee of the U. S. Sav ings and Loan League, and an associate member and trustee of the Southern Oregon Chap ter, Society of Residential Appraisers. Bob Kyle received a B. S. degree at Oregon State Uni versity, was a member of Delta Upsilon social fraternity and a member of Alpha Delta Sigma. At the present time Mr. Kyle is a trustee of St. Luke's Methodist Church of Med ford, a member of the Crater Lions club and a past presi dent of the Medford Toast masters club. He is also affili ated with the 30 Staters club and a member of the Medford chamber of commerce. Robert Kyle, now a captain in the U. S. Air Force Re serve, served throughout World War II in the European theatre and was awarded the combat infantry badge, the purple heart, the bronze star the presidential unit citation and the Europe battle star. John Myers Officer The newest member of First Federal organization will be John Myers, who has resigned as principal of the Phoenix grade school, a position he has held since 1946. Mr. Myers will become loan officer of First Federal Savings upon the close of the school year and will retain his office of association secretary and di rector. He has been active in the education field before and since World War II, when he served in the European thea ter as an infantry sergeant. Mr. Myers is a graduate of Southern Oregon College, and among the offices has has held in his profession was the presidency of the Jackson County Elementary Principals Association and president of the Southern Oregon Elemen tary Principals Association. .. He is a member of Ashlnnd Elks lodge 944 and, as an avo cation, owns and operates a farm in the Applegate Valley area. INSURED SAVINGS LARGE FSLIC-insured savings as sociation numbered 4,211 at year-end 1961. Their total as sets, $77.9 billion, were equiv alent to 95 per cent of assets of all associations; savings held totaled $67.3 billion for 29.8 million savers-about one out of every six persons in the nation. Bernard L. Nutting is vice president, director and gen eral manager of the Medford Corporation, one of Oregon's largest lumber manufacturing firms. Included in the numerous posts held in his business field is director of the West ern Pine Association, trustee and vice president of the Pine Industrial Relations Council and president of the Medford District O. and C. Advisory Board. Mr. Nutting, familiarly known as "Bud" is a graduate of Oregon State University school of forestry with a B. S. degree in logging engineer ing. He received an Xi Sigma Pi honorary In forestry. Bud Nutting is a Mason, Rotarian and member of the Elks lodge, the Medford YMCA, Medford chamber of commerce and Isaac Walton League. He is also an honor ary director of the United Medford Crusade, and is a member of the Medford Ro tary club's employer - cm I ployce relations committee. - SAVINGS INCREASE How did savings associa Harry C. Skyrman Director-Attorney Harry C. Skyrman, senior member of the law firm of Skyrman and Heisel of Med ford, has practiced law in this area since 1924. He is the most recent addition to the board of directors of First Federal Savings and Loan association, elected to that body In 1958. Mr. Skyrman served World War 1 and has been a member of Medford Post 15 American Legion, for over forty years. He has also been a member of Medford Lodge 1168, BPOE, for 35 years. Long active in Medford business as well as legal cir cles, Mr. Skyrman is a direc tor of Jorgensen Dairy Prod ucts, Inc., secretary and di rector of the Jackson County Title Company and vice pres ident and director of the Luke of the Woods Resort Com pany. . Included in his civic activi ties in this community in past years is membership on the Medford Water commission from 1948 to 1959. Myers D. Jones Builder Myers D. Jones, general contractor and builder of the attractive new First Federal Savings and Loan building in Medford, moved to the Rogue River Valley with his wife and three children from Pasa dena in 1954. Enthusiastic over this section of the north west, the Jones family estab lished their home in Med ford. Mr. Jones soon entered in'o civic and community activi tioc in Mprifnrd and served o:i the hnard of director ol Unit ed Medford Crusade and the Red Cross. He is a member of the Medford Elks lodge and has participated in such youth activities as the Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts and Camp- ir-o nirl Mrs Jones, two sons, Dudley and Todd, and ! daughter. Marilyn, are all winter and water sports enthusiasts.
