OREGON Seaf Belts in Evidence at Automobile Show New York - (UPD - Amii! the shiny cars strewn about the coliseum today at the sixth annual international automo bile show is one fixture in greater evidence than ever before here: the seat belt. In part, its appearance is a reflection of legislation passed by the New York legislature to require seat belt anchorage units on 1962 ars sold in this state. Another bill in the leg islature would Tequire seat belts as standard equipment on 1965 models. Producers Agra General Motors, Chrysler, Ford, American Motors, Stu debaker Packard and such foreign car producers as Volkswagen, Mercedes - Benz and Renault, announced be fore the show that they would go along with- the suggestion from Sen. Edward J. Speno, chairman of the Joint Legisla tive Committee on Motor Ve hicles and Traffic Safety, to put seat belts in cars on ex hibit at the show, Speno said. Some of the auto -making firms had previous plans for this action, their represents fives here said. A show official raid that the appearance of the betls had stirred numerous inqui ries among car shoppers and other spectators at the show, which appears headed for a record attendance of perhaps 400.000 persons be fore it is ended. Guestioni Asked "People have noticed that so many of the cars have the belts this year, he said. "They ask a lot of questions about them." One exhibitor said that people comment but "don't seem surprised" at the num ber of cars with belts. I Safety officials - traffic bu reaus, state police groups, re search units-long have cam paigned for use of the belts, at least in the front scats of automobiles, and have urged motorists to add them to an automobile's original equip ment. Southern Oregon Hearings Impossible Eugene - (UPII - Sen. War ren Magnuson (D-Wash.) has advised that hi committee probing problems of the lum ber Industry can not schedule s hearing at this time in Rose burg, Eugene or Medford. . State Rep. Carl Fisher of Eugene, Republican candidate for Congress In the fourth dis trict, said Magnuson advised him of this by letter. Last week Fisher asked .Magnuson to schedule at least one of the three Western Ore gon cities because health of the lumber industry is vital to Southern Oregon, the coast and the mid-Willamette val ,ley. Fisher quoted Magnuson as saying "because of the heavy press of work here in Wash ington, D.C., it is unfortu nately not possible for me to schedule at this time the addi tional hearings you request."
