The Twins took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth and Jack Kralick apeared to be an easy winner with a mjn on third base and two out. But a single by Jerry Adair made it 4-2 and another single fy pinch hitter Dick Williams brought in reliever Joe Boni kowski. Johnny Temple's bad -hop double scored Adair, then an intentional walk by Dick Stig man filled the bases and brought up Powell, hitless in 12 previous trips. Stigman knocked Powell down with his first pitch but the six-foot-three, 235-pound rookie dusted himself off and then drilled a single up the middle for the ball game. Up to Tuesday night, it had been a little rough for young Powell, who was given a Mickey Mantle-type build-up before the season even start ed. Koufax Tuesday set down 18 Chicago Cubs on strikes to run his 1962 record to 3-1 and his strikeout total to 41 in 32 innings. Both sets of figures were far ahead of his 1961 performance at this point when he wound up the season with an 1813 won-lost record but struck out 269 batters in 256 innings to set a league record. my smoking; I'm up to nearly a pack a day." His clutch hit Tuesday night extended the Orioles' winning streak to four games Pitching Problems Beset San Francisco's Giants Pittsburgh OJPII The San Francisco Giants, beset by pitching problems, wind up their first round trip of the 1962 National league cam paign tonight when they try for revenge against the fiery hot Pittsburgh Pirates. Whipped Tuesday by the Bucs, 7-3, manager Alvin Dark's forces still could make the trip a success with vic tory. A win would make the road trip with a 4-3 record; a loss just the other way around. In addition to his pitching problems, manager Dark to day faced the possibility that he would have to rest first baseman Orlando Ccpcda, who pulled a muscle in Tuesday s debacle. In that case, it is probable that Willie McCovey would make his first start of the season. Tuesday, Pittsburgh's Alvin (String) McBean limited San Francisco to three runs and seven hits in eight and one third innings. After he had walked catcher Ed Bailey and given up a single to shortstop Jose Pagan, relief ace EIRoy Face came in to put out a possible uprising. Pittsburgh sewed up the game in the fourth inning when five singles, a walk, an error and a sacrifice fly sent five runs across the plate. Rookie catcher Don Leppert hit a two-run homer for the Pirates in the second inning. Carter Kegler Victory Looms Des Moines. Iowa -C -The Don Carter gloves team of St. i Louis could be forgiven for starting a victory celebration 1 today. The Carters hold the Clas sic division lead in the Amer ican Bowling congress tourna ment with a 6.248 total. The L. !i L. Castle lanes club of San Francisco, last in the pro team field, had a 2.704 in its opening three-game block on Tuesday night. The West Coast stars need a 3.344 in their second ap pearance tonight to tie the Carters. That is 301 pins bet ter than the highest team tot al for a three-game block ver scored in an ABC meet. Rally as Baltimore Nudges Minnesota Baseball lengue. The feat equaled a major loop record which Koufax already shared with Bob Feller, ex-Cleveland Indian ace. (UPI) Koufax' performance Tues day tied the major league rec ord for most strikeouts in a game, set by Hall of Famcr Bob Feller of Cleveland against Detroit in 1938 and equalled by Koufax himself against San Francisco in 1959. It set a new league record for strikeouts in a day game. Feller Holds Record Feller set the major league season strikeout record of 348 in 1956. Rookie Ty Cline, who also had two doubles, tripled home the winning run for the In dians against the Angels after Leon Wagner's two-run homer in the sixth had tied the score at 2-2. Rookie Ron Taylor won his first major league game with help from Frank Funk. Dean Chance was the loser. Rocky Colavito's single with two out in the eighth in ning broke up an excellent pitchers' battle between De troit's Don Mossi and KC rookie Danny Pfister. Mossi (2-1) gave up four hits while Pfis'.er (0-1) allowed only three. Floyd Robinson's two-run homer capped a three-run eighth inning rally by the White Sox against the Yan kees. Robinson's blow came off loser Ralph Terry (31). Johnny Buzhardt was credit ed with his second victory al though he left for a pinch hitter in the eighth. Johnny Blanchard's second inning homer kept the Yanks in front until the eighth. Pete Runnels, normally a singles hitter, connected for two home runs-his first since last June 23rd-to lead the Red Sox over the Senators. Both homers came off loser Joe McClain (0-2). Galen Cisco hurled a four-hitler for his sec ond victory in as many .de cisions. The Pirates, who lost their first game of the season Mon day night, got back on the right track with a five-run fourth inning rally against the Giants. Bill Mazeroski's bases loaded single was the big blow. Loser Juan Marchial also was tapped for a two-run homer by Don Leppert In the second inning. Alvin McBean won his second game against no losses. The Mets, who couldn't stand success, were held to five hits by rookie Sammy Ellis and Moe Drabowsky. Thus a one-game "winning streak" ended for the Mets, who now have dropped 10 of 11. Wally Post had two dou bles and a homer while Vada Pinson also homered. Cincin nati clinched the game with a four-run rally at the ex pense of Craig Anderson in the first inning. Homer Proves Victory Don Taussig's sixth Inning homer proved to be the win ning run in the Colts' victory over the Cards. Taussig, for merly with the Cardinals, con nected off Larry Jackson, who dropped his first decision fol lowing two victories. Hal Woodeshick pitched a six-hit-ter for his second victory. Southpaw Warren S p a h n scored his second triumph for the Braves although the Phil. lies nicked him for nine hits. Spahn doubled home Milwau kce's first run in the third and Eddie Mathews' seventh in ning homer off loser Art Ma haffey in the seventh proved to be the difference, Koufax bordered on the fantastic in the Dodgers' romp over the Cubs.
