But more Important, it went off without any physical violence except for a minor episode involving a nonpicket on the sidelines. He was ar rested and held in lieu of $250 bail on charges of slapping another spectator. Aim Accomplished The volunteer cast of hun dreds outside the Federal Building accomplished its ap- j parent aim of stealing the show from the subcommittee - whose four members heard ! three witnesses in tightly guarded seclusion on the fifth floor. . The anticommittee groups involved hoped to master ad ditional support today through demonstrations they have said are scheduled on several college campuses around the nation and outside the New York and San Francisco city , halls. The picketing groups here turned out fewer persons on Tuesday than their leaders had predicted. Police Inspec tor Ed Walker estimated the maximum number at from BOO to 800 before noon. But through most of the day, the total was far short of this even though picket leaders had forecast up to 2,000 j marchers. Chairman Clyde Doyle (D-1 Calif.) and the other subcom mittee members, were about the only persons maintaining . public silence on the opening I day of hearings. Ben Dobbs, an avowed spokesman for the Commu nist party in Southern Cali fornia, told newsmen he in voked the Fifth Amendment in refusing to answer ques tions about his associations nd various documents. He was one of the first witnesses. John Dcspol. administrator of Steclworkers Union Local 2058, who also testified, told reporter? he "answered all questions." He was under- j stood to have been queried about 12 union members cm ployed at the Maywood, Calif., plant of the Consolidated Western Steel Co. The local was placed un der Despol's trusteeship by the international union be cause of charges and counter charges of communism and John Birch Society advocacy in its ranks. Despol, known as an anti-Communist, said he urged the committee to inves tigate the John Birch Society as well as alleged Reds.
