Because they treat students like adults, my folk are worried. Mrs. K. E. To come right out with it, Eileen has been accepted by a progressive wo men's college which actually offers its students a course in birlh control. Now what sort of school can it be if that's the sort of thing it teaches? We can't put our foot down on this. Eileen's grandfather left her a trust fund to finance her college education and the purse strings are out of our hands for the next four years, anyway. Of course we can try moral suasion but whenever we offer our shocked opinion, Eileen tells us we're reaction ary fuddy-duddies longing for the old Victorian days. I hope you can straighten her out as to what a college is for. Eileen E. My parents have pounced upon this one course and labelled the col lege I'm selecting "fast", be cause of it. Naturally it's all a matter of a girl's character and moral standards as to what use she makes of this information. When a girl's away from home, it seems she's in great er danger from not knowing things than from knowing them. Since the college is her home away from home, it is responsible for her welfare as well as for her education. This school happens to take its responsibility seriously. I'm hurt that my parents think I must be ignorant to be good. They've raised me to be good. Knowledge will help me stay that way. The Council: Unbelievable and shocking as it sounds, an associate professor of Pediat rics at a leading medical college revealed, in a recent magazine article, that pediat ricians have been receiving increasinly frequent visits from ex-patients, now grown into college girls, who plead with them desperately to treat their latest problem pregnancy just as willing ly as they used to treat ear ache and sore throat. Some of the alert colleges wish to be completely fair to the girls under their wing. While despite close supervis ion and strict rules they can't supply brakes for a girl whose morals are slippery, they can supply facts. Surprisingly, the most sophisticated young wo men have only vague, usual ly mistaken, ideas. The col lege Eileen refers to not only urges its students to go straight, but feels duty-bound to set them straight on ques tions which can Ret muddied over by old wives' tales, inside info and double talk. Mrs. E., leaping to a rather hysterical conclusion, is mis taken in her fears that wan tonness may be encouraged by frank discussion. The course she mentions is one in hygiene. It's been conducted at Barnard since 1948 by Dr Marjory Nelson whose un flinching policy is to answer all questions. At Vassar, too, several "sex panels" are offered, at which four officials the colleg' M. D., psychiatrist, assistant president and zoology profes sor reply to any question the freshmen and sophomores present. Other colleges are weighing student demands for a more honest, realistic approach to the natural, inti mate problems which trouble them. Certainly license and free love aren't condoned by these schools. And, Eileen's college merely proposes to supply students with truths to re place the half-truths which en snare them. Building Permit Value Increases The value of building per mits in Medford issued during March increased over March last year, the University of Oregon's bureau of business research ha reported.
