Washington -0IPH- The pow erful little atom "continues to amaze scientist and layman alike." So says the Atomic Energy Commission in a recent re view of AEC-sponsorcd nu clear research projects. For example: -One common radioactive material is used to power an unmanned radio transmitter that automatically sends back weather information from the frozen Arctic. -Another is helping im prove the yield of the peanut plant. -Other radioactive mater ials used in research are help ing man to discover how green plants turn solar ener gy into food. Nuclear Power Plants Meanwhile, atomic heat is running nuclear power plants on land and in space, and also at sea-as witness all the atomic submarines, the car rier Enterprise and the nu clear merchant ship Savannah. Research with radioactive materials suggests many lines of fruitful study. But break throughs, the AEC notes, "come rarely." Progress de pends on "a steady accretion of knowledge." Nevertheless: -A substance has been test ed which may be able to car ry killing amounts of radia tion to cancer cells without doing great harm to normal cells. Radiation Sterilization -A means of radiation steri lization has been discovered which may be used to elimin ate cotton's boll weevil menace. -Why people, and animals and plants, get old may be ex plained by the effect of na tural radiation on individual cells of the organism. -Radiation studies have un covered a brain center which, normally, limits food intake. When radiation was used to destroy this center in mice, they ate and ate and ate until they weighed 10 times as much as normal. -Oddly enough, for one strain of mice, al least, chron ic exposure to low levels of radiation appeared to increase the average lifespan. Reduces Cholesterol -As a byproduct o research with radiation, it, was dis covered that a certain yeast extract reduced the level of cholestrol in rals despite a high-fal diet. Cholesterol may be involved in artery-hardening diseases which kill many human beings. The AEC has found that its research extends naturally into many fields of scientific investigation. Because it must some day find safe means of disposing of radioactive ma terials, the commission has en gaged in occanographic studies. In so doing it discovered that water below the half mile level in the North Atlan tic stays there about 650 years on the average before It dif fuses somewhere else. Below the Equator, In the South Atlantic, this "mean residence time" was 350 years. Why the difference? Who knows-yet? jfrnllrrr irik I UXnullll V?
