Watkini (Regliter St Tribune SyndtcaU, 1962) Parent Pelicans Waiting For Pitter of Pelicin Feel On the sandy shore of a de serted island, basking under a tropical sun, we found a "love nest." Soon on that slop ing beach will be the patter of little feet, for Mrs. Eastern Brown Pelican is incubating a clutch of eggs. Many of the pilings and bridge rails were strangely empty now, and would be un til the nesting was over. Peli can Pete and Pelican Phyllis have romance on their minds, The sand on which the eggs are resting is warm and soft The surrounding water is teeming with fish. Like a magnet attracts iron filings, the isolated islands and keys beckon to nesting pelicans. There a benevo lent and ever watchful gov ernment agency is ready and able to protect the romantic pelican couples from outside interference. Somehow the birds seem to know, for they come from miles around con centrating on these protected rookeries. Talk Together . What a great Joy 11 is for birds who may not have seen each other for months to get together and gabble, renewing old friendships. Some gather in small groups of six, or eight birds, heads together, obvious ly visiting with one another. There must be much to talk about; maybe they even "run down" some absent member or one late in arriving at the rookery. Some of the "girls" may have heard of an indiscre tion in the pelican world. Perhaps some may tell their willing youngsters how utterly worthless their "old man" is, gallivanting around the bays and waterways while "she" is wearing her feet down or up to her knees. Start Families After the conversations, ev ery female pelican begins lay ing eggs. Mr. Pelican, when he is not fishing, may come In from time to time to try to help. The nests may be close enough together for the "girls" to converse with one another by voice and gesture. Dozens of pelicans there are, and all devoted to a single purpose - to produce a peli can population for tomorrow's sunny beaches. It would seem to the rest of us that parental love could withstand any shock after looking at a baby pelican. Probably the gawky little ones are as near and dear to pelican parents as the most precious baby is to Its human mother. Maybe, after all, love is a little blind. 4-H News Ah Sew Members of the Ah Sew club have completed gather ing skirts and are ready to start on dresses now. Diana Shlnn, Reporter. SO? The roll was called and we answered with what we like best about 4-H. May ft our club Is going to have a Moth er's Tea, to be held at the Jossy home. A food commit tee was appointed. Karen Jos sy gave a demonstration. The cooking meeting was called to order by President Diane Barton. The roll was called and we answered with topics for demonstrations. The minutes were read by secre tary, Elaine Meyer. We are planning our pre-fair. Kathy Pritchard, Elaine Meyer, Georgia Hubbard and Karen Jossy will be on the committee for arranging the pre-fair. Mrs. Bohncrt gave the assignments. The meeting was held at the home of Elaine and Gloria Meyer. Congress Probing Auto Industry's Horsepower Pilch Detroit - fl'PD - Congress has quirtly started another inves- tisation of the auto industry's use of speed and horsepower to sell new cars, it has been learned. Chairman Oren Harris of the House Interstate and For eign Commerce committee be. gan the inquiry with letters- to the presidents of all the major auto companies. The Arkansas congressman asked the auto executives to furnish his committee with copies of all recent advertise ments which stress horse power and speed. Harris, a Democrat, said he understands the industry has abandoned a 1957 agreement not to advertise performance and instead to stress safety in today's cars. Help. Sales The five - year - old stand against racing was taken by the Automotive Manufac turers after Congress warned thai carmakers were placing "excessive stress on horse power and speed" and Indi cated federal controls might be necessary. But the industry has found it difficult if not impossible to follow the spirit of the agreement. "People like to see cars like they own win races," one auto man said. "How the cars do. can help or hurt sales." So, despite Ihe AMA ban, automakers are still sponsor ing racing teams in one way or another, according to Sluriebaker President Sher wood Egbert. The horsepower race is still on, too. Pontiac now offers a 420 horsepower engine. Plymouth, Ford and Chevrolet also are in the 400-plus class. One engineer predicts 700 horse power supercharged passenger car engines before too long. Say Cars Safer The industry points out, however, that despite the big power-plants, cars today are safer than ever. Carmakers spend millions yearly on new safety features. And they cita figures showing that in 1909, the last big year of the horse and buRgy, the death rate was five times higher than now. Spokesmen for the auto firms would not comment on the latest government move I except to say "We are con i forming with the request and getting together examples ot our advertising." Some of the ads bear out Harris' contention that the in dustry is again stressing horse power and speed. A Chevrolet ad lists the horsepower of a big new V-8 engine at 409 and a Dodge ad proclaims that the "Dart 440 handles like a perfectly set up race car." Another ad says that world driving champion Phil Hill is "a Buick buff" and soon will be driving the firm's new "Wildcat" luxury sports car. Starting salaries, especially for engineers and scientists, re up about 3 to 4 per cent, continuing a trend of the past eight years. Graduating students are taking more interviews with company recruiters than they did in previous years. State and federal civil service are having difficulty In attracting graduates because of the start ing salary differential. Companies with only east ern locations are experiencing a "reluctance" In attracting graduates, placement officials said. OSU graduates will find salaries varying upward from $4,500 in some teaching Jobs to more than $1,000 a month in physics and mathematics with a doctor's degree and ex perience. Not all 1962 graduates go directly on the labor market. Many male graduates have military obligations and In creasing numbers are going on for advanced degree work, officials noted. Bandon Teacher to Get Sanity Hearing San Francisco tUPD A san ity hearing will be held April 25 for Vivian E. Walker, a Bandon, Ore., high school teacher charged with robbing a San Francisco grocery store. He was arrested March 13 and was to have entered a plea Wednesday. Instead two physicians were appointed to examine him and report their finding at the hearing. When arrested. Walker told authorities he was troubled by finances.
