The ferries are po old that Ayers said there could be a "tragedy" one of these days that the state would forever regret. I Megler bridge over the Col umbia mouth will abolish the ferry system, but the bridge isn't due to be open until lfl()4. Holstrom said the way things are going, the bridge might not be ready until 1965 but Oregon Highway Engineer j Forest Cooper, also at the .meeting, disagreed, saying the target date is still 1984. j One of the three ferries is j.'iS years old and Ayers said the state should buy an avail able ferry at Coronado, Calif., for $484,000. Earlier this week Cooper said the department just doesn't have the money, and he added that a ferry L a li ability and ean't be resold. Avers disputed this Thursday, in Cooper's presence, and Cooper had no comment. Oregon Youth to Receive Young American Medal Washington-(UPIi-A 12-year old Oregon boy who saved his two younger brothers from their burning house and a 15-year old Michigan youth who saved his friend from drowning will receive the Young American Medal for bravery. The I960 medals will go to Gerald Lee Davis of On tario, Ore., and Gordon Ber nard Kilmer of Reed City, Mich., Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy said Wednesday. Congress established the medals in 1950. The selec tions were made by a commit tee consisting of FBI Director I J. Edgar Hoover, Solicitor General Archibald Cox and Edwin O. Guthman, the at torney general's special as sistant in charge of public in formation. The Davis boy ran into his burning home Dec. 12, 1960, and rescued his 2-year-old brother Neil. He was hospital ized with serious burns.
