Four Groups Get Plaques in Event MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON Jour groups competing in the recent music contest at Hedrick Junior High school received plaques for being the top winner in each of their divisions. They are McLoughlin Jun ior High in the junior high bands class, Hedrick in the junior high choruses class, Briscoe school of Ashland in the elementary choruses class, and in the junior high orches tra class, Hedrick and Ash-.i land Junior' High's string' or chestra each received . a plaque for finishing in a tie. She declines to reveal the extent of its held a press conference and said that her study of the Bible had convinced her that God has revealed in Holy Writ that racial integration was a sin. This is where she collided head-on wit- the Roman Catholic Church which holds that it is a man's .soul, not his color, that is vital. Ummel's letter said he an ticipated a reply from Mrs. Gaillot either in person or by writing. Mrs. Gaillot said she she could convince the church that its views on integration were erroneous, kirs. Gaillot had a conversation with Father Joseph Costello, in structor in moral theology and church law at Notre Dame Seminary, and cited passages which she interprets as being in favo, of segre gation. The interview left her position and that of the church unchanged. Won't Swerve Mrs. Gaillot now says she will never swerve from her course, and she already ;s thinking in terms of martyr dom. They wore ad vised against it at the c ance ry and they disbanded. Mrs. Gaillot's husband. Bernrrd, plans to ask (lie church ' to excommunicate him, too. They have three sons, aged 21. 16. and 14. They removed the eldcsl from De La Salle Catholic School because, according to Mrs. Gaillot. "he was being taught that Jesus and the Virgin Mary were black." She cited the first chapter of the Solomon's Canticle of Canticles . in the Catholic Bible: "1 am black but beauti ful, o ye daughter? of Jeru salem, as the tents of Cedar, as the curtains f Solomon." An explanatory note in the Catholic Bible states that the reference is to the church: "That is, the Church of Christ, founded in humility appearing outwardly afflicted and. as it were, black and contemptible: but inwardly, this is, in its doctrine and morally, fair and beautiful." Judging from the size of their home,, the Gaillnts ap pear to be in moderate cir cumstances, but she sayx she plans to send her two younger sons to private schools if the parochial schools integrate in the fall: "We have friends who will help us with the financing." The forthcoming intecra- ' tion of Catholic schools has attracted more attention than recent court .decision, on public schools. Federal Judge J. Skelly. Wright has just granted a petition by 102 Negro parents that all pub lic schools in the city shall be integrated through the sixth grade in September.- At pres ent six public schools have been1 integrated with a total of 12 Negro'pupils in the first and second grades Trcre are 47. white grade schools In ' New Orlear, and 21,110 white pupils.
